The Falco Family has known the Toto Family for over 100 years!
They are a bright, hard working, integrous and loving family.
I had the honor of knowing Carmine since I was a boy.
We worked on the then nascent Christmas Committee checking holiday lighting and early robotic figures.
My father, Joseph Sr. and I hired Robert Guter, NJ's foremost Historic Preservation expert as a consultant to restore One Waverly Place back to it's original Italiante Victorian splendor.
We hired Carmine Toto to accomplish this difficult task.
He and his dedicated staff performed admirably.
Carmen then restored perhaps a half dozen others returning Madison's splendor.
... When I founded the Madison Historic Preservation Commission c 1989...the one person I wanted to be a member was CARMINE TOTO.
I'll both think and miss you always Carmine.
Thank God, I have Maria Carmine Jr., Michael to stay close to.

Carmine was a pillar of our community. When you think about America at its best: Small towns with business leaders in the community that were involved with their church and vested in creating a wonderful community for everyone, Carmine was one of those people. We are truly lucky to have Carmine and the Toto family as our neighbors and I was fortunate to know him as a friend. I will miss him and his legacy will live on thru his family and thru the traditions he helped to establish in our town.

I first met Carmine 14 years ago when I moved into the neighborhood with my wife, Sun Ju, and daughter, Jenna. I met him cutting though the property to the train one early morning and he pulled up alongside with his truck, as he often did, and we chatted. At first, I thought he was going to chase me off, but soon enough, he was telling me an abridged version of his long family history in the town. Construction, wine making, and the right of way along the railroad and the YMCA, I was amazed at the history and accomplishments. I knew so little about the area. He then told me how, even as a young boy, that I reminded him of all the men he saw cutting through with briefcases in hand to catch the commuter railroad to NY in the morning and returning home again each night after a long day at the office. He was happy to see the tradition still strong after all those years, and now that it was paved with gravel, it made it even easier for folks to carry on with their business. It was like he was helping us get to work to support our families without our realizing it. After my second daughter, Ava, was born, we chatted much the same as before along this path about important life ideals, like raising a family with a strong sense of traditional family values, Catholic faith and a good education. I could tell he was imparting his wisdom to me in his own thoughtful way. Just telling it like it was. Years later, when my girls had grown into budding teens and hung around the bocce court while we participated in charity league events, he casually told me what a great job my wife and I had done with them and that they were growing into beautiful and healthy-looking young ladies, always so cheerful and well behaved. You couldn’t ask for a better compliment from a man as respected and as caring as he was. It meant a lot to me to hear that from him. He gave me a sense of pride in fatherhood that I will never forget for as long as I live. Not many people could do that like he could. It only comes from a long life of dedication to hard work and family, of which he was a shining example. A lion among men. I will always be grateful for his candor and friendship, and I thank God for our having crossed paths, however brief, on those dark, early morning trots to the train, or on those cool fall evenings around the bocce court, with wine, pizza and casual conversations. I will miss you dearly, Carmine. I wish you God’s speed!

Much can be written and said about Carmine Toto Jr. The fact is that Carmine wrote and told his own story. The pages representing his life are filled with faith in God, love of family, friendship, tradition, craftsmanship, stewardship of his beloved family homestead, and his absolute devotion to all things Madison. Walk down the streets of Madison and you will see Carmine’s vast imprint on our community. From the gingerbread of Maple Avenue, to the steeple of the Presbyterian Church, the top of the Masonic Lodge, the painted flagpole in the center of Kings Road, the buildings of Main Street and of Waverly Place, as well as the grandest homes and buildings of the surrounding area, Carmine worked to display and preserve a level of craftsmanship that many would have let fall to the ages. Not Carmine. He would work fairly, and as a gentleman, many times reproducing intricate building details in his shop at minimal cost to his clients, because he wanted the job done properly and because he knew it was the right thing to do. Many of Carmine’s clients would become his lifetime friends and many of his friends would become his clients. This ensured that Carmine had a tremendous network of people around him, who appreciated his work, and valued his friendship.
Indeed, friendship defined Carmine. To know him was an extreme privilege. To be counted among his many close friends was both an honor and a gift. Carmine himself was a gift. As a husband, as a father, a grandfather, brother, cousin, or friend, and even if you didn’t know him, you received many gifts from Carmine during his lifetime. One such gift was the annual Christmas parade in Madison with accompanying decorations including Madison’s own Santa House. For over four decades, Carmine made sure that the residents and visitors of Madison experienced the magic, the wonder, and the joy of Christmas. It was the true spirit of Christmas that poured from Carmine as he built, repaired, stored, moved, and displayed all of the elements of Christmas that we as residents of Madison have come to expect every year. This was hard work and Carmine gave of himself to make it happen. When Covid struck, and parents wondered if Christmas 2020 could be “normal” it was Carmine’s determination that it would be. Because of Carmine, just like every other year, the children of Madison and the surrounding towns would be able to visit with Santa.
Carmine really did love Madison. He served on the Madison Historic Preservation Commission and gave untold hours of service to the community in so many different ways. There is now a gaping hole left by his loss. Those who knew Carmine are comforted by knowing that throughout his lifelong journey, he did things his way and lived a full life in service to others. Perhaps, the most lasting gift from Carmine is the gift of his family, who follow in his footsteps and continue to serve as a link to the many friends Carmine leaves behind. I’m thankful for knowing Carmine. I’m grateful for his friendship. I’m sorry for his loss, and I’m incredibly proud to call him my friend. There is no “goodbye”. There’s only “until we meet again”. - John Forte

A Tribute to Carmine Toto, Jr.
Our families became close after John met Carmen, and worked with him, on Madison’s Historic Preservation Commission some twenty plus years ago. As we grew to know each other Carmen and Marie included us in family gatherings. We wondered if “hospitality” wasn’t their middle name. As many will attest; love and pride of their family, its history and business are cornerstones for the Toto family.
All who knew Carmen, knew; that when the hat went on, he was ever-ready for the challenge of the day. No time would be waisted… his office was his Suburban… fair and honest business was conducted over the hood of his car. We could count on him in a pinch to stand by us in any emergency with his band of highly talented craftspeople. Anyone he shared with us would be of the highest integrity and skill. No job was either too big or too small for Carmen. John and I always admired his “can-do spirit”. It was what we needed with all the projects we had in our historic home and in the commercial properties we steward. He, as we, understood and valued Madison’s commitment to the preservation of its past.
John enjoyed his company. They shared a similar immigrant-family story… and knew the struggle of leaving a beloved homeland to begin anew with nothing more that pride of heritage, determination to succeed with hard work, and a dream. Many a time, John would escape with Carmen for some sort of adventure: visiting a local rail yard to check on the latest train car in repair by a local train club; a run down to the Englishtown’s race track to cheer on Chatham Main’s drivers; or shopping at a wholesaler for Christmas wreathes with “just the right lights” for downtown Madison, to name a few. Why all these escapades? … to seize the moment… and taste the sweetness of life… his life. We had a valued friend and mentor in Carmen Toto, we will miss him terribly. “Look, listen, and learn!”… Thanks Carmen, you taught us well.
We wish him Godspeed… and may his family bask in the knowledge that his legacy will live on in all those whom he touched. Much love, Kathy and John Solu

Dear Marie and Family,
While I was at CSE many years ago, I remember fondly the way that Marie always spoke of her family, and the love that was apparent even through stories shared about ones I had never met. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I hope the days ahead are filled with quiet moments of peace while you remember the love given, shared, and which will undoubtedly endure. My heart is with yours during this difficult time.

Dear Marie & family~
Jim & I want to extend our sincere sympathy to each of you. I know loss is very difficult. Saying our final goodbye is probably the hardest part. But, after reading Carmine's obituary, my sadness turned to "admiration." Reading the many accolades, as well as accomplishments he made in his 76 years was truly amazing. He took life and lived it to his full capacity!
Not only the deep love of his wife & best friend Marie, his dedicated role as a dad & grandfather as well. But, his love of people & life extended to SO MANY other avenues...the town of Madison, the children especially. Making "Santa" and all the excitement of Christmas come to life in our little country town of Madison. He really only left bodily, but for all that I listed, and SO MUCH more, his legacy will live on forever!
He did God's work on earth, and am confident he is at peace with God & his family in heaven.
Having served as "Mrs.Claus" under his reign, one of the "highlights" of my life, I personally say...
Thank-you Carmine! Madison will forever hold you in our hearts for all you are & all you did.
Fondly, Ann Marie & Jim Brady X♡

I have never met a person as generous as Carmine. Eleven years ago, Carmine was there to personally welcome my wife and I as newcomers to Madison.
He reached out to me and consistently included me in his life. Many times Carmine would ask me to go for a ride with him, to "pick up" something. These were wonderful moments of sharing our life stories. He made me feel like a part of his family, his wife Marie, his sons Michael and Carmine, his daughter Ann Marie, and their children and friends. What a wonderful family!
It is so clear to me the beautiful influence he had on them.

Dear Marie & Family,
Dennis and I first came to Madison from California 11 years ago, knowing no one. Soon after I started my new job at the Y Carmine called to introduce himself, welcome me to Madison and invite me over to meet he and Marie. Carmine -- who knew everyone through his work, church, family, and volunteer life -- offered to help me get acquainted in the community. Carmine’s enthusiasm, warm welcome, great sense of humor and love of his community and its history quickly made him a treasured friend to Dennis and me. Over the years, Carmine never stopped being a source of support, advice, and always good humor. I will miss him pulling up in his Suburban to say a quick ‘hi’ and wish me a good day. Dennis and I will miss Carmine stopping by to deliver a bottle of wine on holidays, some special Italian baked treat at Easter, and special custard pastries on St. Joseph’s Day. Carmine always had ideas and stories about his many projects – everything from restoring nearby churches to coming up with new ideas for the Christmas parade. He was extraordinary in his generosity and service to others. His heart was so big that he loved his family, friends, community, and everything in it more than anyone we have ever known. Dennis and I will be always grateful that Carmine’s big heart had room in it for us. We will miss him and treasure his memory always. We’re sending you love and prayers as you move through this painful time of Carmine’s passing.

Junior was always such a wonderful fixture in my life growing up, and always with a smile and warm welcome. Running errands with my dad always included a stop by the workshop to pick up something. Every summer there was time at the pool with Jr as the host welcoming everyone like it was a resort. I'm so happy my kids had that experience at a recent family reunion hosted by the Totos.
To Marie, Anne-Marie, Carmine, and Mike -- I'm so sorry for your loss. He was such a sweet and generous man, and I will miss him.
Added my favorite picture of Jr & my dad at the winery. As always, just talking and enjoying their families.

Loved being with Carmen feeling like I was back at my grandparents house in the Bronx. Walking and eating grapes off his vines
Brought back such wonderful memories. Family was always his priority and hard work.. A wonderful strong loving giving man.
You will be missed beyond words.
