Obituary of Annie V. Baten

Annie Vernice Baten was born in Morristown, NJ to Charlie Green Sally and Mary L. (King) Broome on November 27, 1941.  Annie was the only girl of four siblings.  Though born in New Jersey she spent her early childhood in Chase City, VA.  She returned to New Jersey as a teenager and graduated from Madison High School. Annie advanced her education after graduation by attending the Stafford Hall School of Business in Summit NJ.

Annie was courted by her husband Curtis of almost 59 years during her high school years and they married on November 24, 1961 in Madison, NJ.  To their union four daughters were born.  They reared their children in Madison, NJ moving to Morristown, NJ in 1986 after the youngest of the four graduated High School.  Annie remained a homemaker and nourished her four daughters in every way until the youngest of the four were school age.  While at home with her own children Annie was very involved in the church with giving her time and sewing talents to make skirts, provide alterations to choir robes and helping in anyway that she could.  She also provided sewing classes to children at the Madison Community Center. You would also find her on many Friday evenings and Saturday mornings pressing and curling many family and friends daughters hair as she knew how to make every little girls hair shine.  When Annie had provided a strong example and given a strong foundation to her girls she entered the work force first as an Account Manager at Silver Burdette Book Publishing Company and then as an Account Manager with the Morris County Social Services Office of Temporary Assistance Investigative Department where she retired from 13 years ago.

Annie, a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother always gave of herself to her family and friends.  Though she worked fulltime outside of the home she kept one of the cleanest homes to be found, her girls were always well put together, she always had time to volunteer and carry her girls from one activity to the next.  She traveled to and from track meets which was one of her greatest joys watching her twins compete, band performances, softball games, football cheer performances, concerts, plays and anything else her girls were involved in as they grew up.  As they left home and started their own families she was once again there with every birth for weeks to help out.  When her son in law was ill she was there, for surgeries and long recoveries she was there.  Always selfless!  Always giving!

Annie was an active and faithful member of First Baptist Church where she was the church Secretary for many years and though not a member gave many hours to Bethel AME church where her husband was a member and her girls attended both churches at certain points in their lives growing up essentially in both churches.  Bottle Hill Day was not the same without her famous Sweet Potato and Coconut Custard pies on both church tables for sale.  They were a hot item and first to go.  Annie was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary # 43 in Florham Park and member of the Senior Citizens of Morris Township.  In her free time she enjoyed playing bingo, putting together puzzles, completing word searches, attending family reunions and spending time with family and friends.

Annie was preceded in death by her parents Charlie Green Sally and Mary L.  (King) Broome, two brothers Kenneth Sally (Marion) and Robert “Petie” Sally, a grandson Emmanuel Stewart, a sister in law Margaret Crumblin and a son in law Michael Wilson (Tracy).

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Curtis Baten of Morristown, NJ, her four daughters Tracy Wilson of Atlanta, GA, Carolyn Stewart of  Budd Lake, NJ, Joyce Cox (Warren) of Waldorf, MD and Kimberly Baten-Smith (Fitzroy) of Bryantown, MD, eight grandchildren, Vanessa Wilson, Warren Joel-Curtis Cox (Daishae’), Kirsten Jackson (Joe), Marc Cox, Jada Dawson (Jalen), Courtney Cox, Taylor Smith and Kennedy Smith, four great grandchildren Jasiah and Jayden Cox, Malia Beauvil and the anticipated birth of Skyler Jackson, a brother Charlie Sally of Dover, NJ, a brother in law Stanley Baten (Joyce), a sister in law Willie Lee Trapp (James) as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Relatives & close friends are invited to attend a visitation held on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 from 9:30AM to 11:30AM at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison.
