Eleanor “Peachie” Attonito posted a condolence
Sunday, August 16, 2020
It is with sadness that I read today 8/16/2020 of the passing of the Legendary Madison Coach Ted Monica. His record speaks for itself and it was an honor to know him and his beautiful wife Lee during the years I raised my family in Madison 1976-2004. He was an athletic director at the time and my children excelled in sports at the High School. My condolences to his family, his friends and all who knew this man as well as his long time assistant at the HS, Kathy Ross. His contribution to our Community and it’s children is much appreciated and remembered. Sincerely, Eleanor “Peachie” Attonito & family

Coach Monica was quite a man. He was a great coach and leader of men. He had profound influence on my brother, John, and me, as well as our entire family. He was the centerpiece of negotiating a college scholarship for me. When I took driver's education with him, he would make sure that I understood all the nuances of his Split-Six Defense. He did such good job that my future HS team in SC set a school record for wins that still stands today (from 1972!).
The best compliment I could give him is that HE IS A WINNER in every way (teacher, coach, mentor, parent, and husband). Some say that 'life isn't fair" and that may be true... but that's because people like Coach Ted Monica were at the front of the line ahead of them. We'll miss you, but will never forget you, Coach!

Coach Ted Monica was just as great of a football coach as Vince Lombardi - he made you feel important and give 110% effort.
I have also thanked Coach Monica for making the Madison Ice Hockey Team a Varsity Sport and getting us a great Hockey Coach which lead to our 1975 team becoming State Champions - he came through for us and it felt very good to come through for him.

I had the pleasure of working under Coach at Madison HS. He was the best AD I have had the pleasure of working with. He was not all about football. He cared about all sports.
When I was appointed as the volleyball coach in the early 80’s I went to Coach and said is there anyway we could put 2 eye hooks in the walls so that I can run a Varsity and JV practice simultaneously. That very Sunday Coach and Al where in the gym installing the hooks as I stood by and laughed the entire time. What a pair. That was Coach. He would do anything to make your program succeed.
May He Rest In Peace!
Regards,
Ed Saggio

About 7 years ago I met Coach at his favorite breakfast place CJs. Many of Coach’s past ballplayers would come in and give him a hug or kiss. I became friends with Coach and one day he said to come and sit with us in Church. Coach and his buddies had their own spot in Saint Vincent Martyr every week. That Sunday my wife wanted to sit on the other side of the altar. So when I get to CJs Monday morning coach says- Tom- “You’re out.” I said what? He said “ I asked you to sit with us, you didn’t you are out. “ I said Coach I never knew I was in. He laughed and we became close friends after that.
Another story coach told was the time some of the greatest coaches ( Paul Bear Bryant, Darrell Royal) asked Vince Lombardi to explain a defensive situation- Coach Lombardi said you guys come with me He made them sit and said listen to Ted, Coach Lombardi told them “listen to him ,he’ll teach you football.”
I asked one CJ patron what position he played for coach and he said-I didn’t play football, Coach was my driver’s ED instructor. Coach wore many hats and had a positive impact on so many people.
Rest in Peace Coach- and thanks for letting me in.

Our wedding anniversary every year includes happy memories of Uncle Ted and his offer to have Rick (my husband) "out of the state in 30 minutes" on the morning of our wedding day. That was 43 years ago and we'll have loving memories of Uncle Ted forever. ~Catherine

My deepest sympathy to Mark Monica and Ted Monica Jr and his family on the loss of your father Coach Ted Monica. He was a beloved leader in Madison and as a student of Madison High School I can say he was a football legend and great father and husband to his family. I remember fondly visiting with Coach Monica in his Director of Athletics Office in Madison High School. Behind his desk was a small prayer card in a frame from the famous Vincent Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers. He used to tell me that "Quiet Self Determination and Pride would bring his Madison Dodgers to victory on the football field and in life"
His Madison High School football team enjoyed a 33-0-0 victory from 1977-1980.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Monica Family
Respectfully Yours.
