Obituary of Elsbeth A. Schumm

Elsbeth A. Schumm, a former resident of Wayne, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 5, 2022, at Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains. She was 88.

Elsbeth is survived by her beloved niece and nephews Rebecca Rittler, Christian Schumm, and Carl Schumm.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Fred Schumm, and her sister, Ruth Schumm.

Elsbeth was born in Newark on February 7, 1934 to the late Karl and Anna Schumm (née Elsaesser). She was raised in Kenilworth where she attended public school. She went on to earn her undergraduate degree from Shelton College and her Master’s degree in Education from William Patterson University.

Elsbeth had a long teaching career with the West Milford School System spanning 35 years. She adored the children she taught and enjoyed watching them flourish through her tutelage. She was a faith filled woman, and attended the Hawthorne Chapel in Hawthorne, NJ. Elsbeth loved to sing and was part of the Hawthorne Chapel choir, Ted Cornell Chorale, Voices of Praise, and the Ridgewood Chorale.

Elsbeth loved the outdoors and spent her time hiking, biking, and skiing in snow and on water. She also enjoyed traveling in her younger years, visiting Europe and other overseas locations.

Elsbeth will be remembered as a wonderful and loving aunt. Having no children of her own, she considered her niece and nephews like her own children. She will be deeply missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Elsbeth held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at the Hawthorne Gospel Church, 2000 NJ-208, Hawthorne, NJ 07506.
