I am so saddened by the news of Ed passing from this life.
I just received the information today and I am shocked that I did not get word sooner.
Ed was a part of my happy memories from Madison. We often shared gardening and cooking tips.
He kept me company at EMT parties and events. Always making me laugh.
Drats! Now I will never learn where the secret mushroom patch is.
Good Night Handsome. Rest forever in peace and love.
With warmest sympathy

We knew Edward Cooke as our crossing guard, as we live on Ridgedale Avenue diagonally opposite Walnut. He was wonderful to our children, and he always stopped the traffic to let us back out of our driveway. We used to bake banana bread and brownies for him; we always shared our birthday cupcakes. Over the years, we had many conversations, and we were very sad when he decided to stop working. We gave him a bag of chocolates to wish him well on his last day as a crossing guard -- little did we know that that would be the last time we saw him. It was only in inquiring about the beautiful wreath on Ridgedale that we discovered he had passed. What a wonderful, wonderful man! He is sorely missed.

To know Eddie was to love him. He had a heart of gold and truly was a giving and kind soul , He absolutely adored his wife Mela, his two daughters,Lucianne and Jackie, his son in laws and the lights of his life, his grandchildren! Besides them, he especially loved his mother-in-law, Lucy and her sister, my grandmother, whom he was affectionately called, Aunt Gertie. There was nothing that he wouldn’t do for either of them. They shared a special bond that was beautiful to witness. Eddie, may the angels lead you into paradise, and may you Rest In Peace in the arms of Our Lord. Everyone is going to miss you terribly, especially your smile !

You were a great person Eddo, with a big smile and a even bigger heart. Luciann has told me stories like , you making pizzas for x-mas and delivering them to people in Madison, taking a crane and lifting gazebo over house to put in back yard for his wife and kids, he would have done anything for his kids. I remember when we first met I said “hello Mr Cooke”
He says “ my name is EDDY!!!”(in a grumpy voice) but he was a gentile giant, I already miss watching football with him, miss smoking on the front porch, miss when telemarketers call and he yells “TAKE ME OFF THE LIST!!!!, gonna miss your soup , you on the grill, playing poker, your wise cracks but always in fun , you were old school as they come , with your flip phone.
This is all so heartbreaking, gonna miss you “Mr Cooke”. : (...
Love Billy

May you rest in peace Ed. I could fill an entire book listing all the times you helped me out. No matter how big or small, time of day, or what you were doing at the moment, you would drop everything and call whoever to help.
It seemed as if you had an endless supply of knowledge both useful and useless that always amazed me, sometimes you were probably making stuff up, but you were right so many times that I couldn't argue against it. I wish I had remembered at least one of 20 knots you showed me how to tie.
And you had jokes for days that always made me laugh. For the rest of my life whenever someone stubs their toe, I will always offer to call a "Toe Truck" for them.
It was pleasure to have you as a father-in-law. You will be missed and never forgotten.
Tom

So sad to hear this. My good friend and next door neighbor for several years on Arbor Way in Convent Station. We would sit and talk for hours about our days in Madison as younger men. He was accepting of anybody and everybody and a friend to all. He never had a bad word to say and coined the phrase I will always remember when it came to different people, "every ass has its own seat". A classic Eddie Cooke attitude and humor that he shared with everyone he met. A good guy gone too soon. Always ready to lend a helping hand and offer advice. RIP Ed. Condolences to my lifelong friend, Mela and her girls, Luciann & Jacklyn.

I remember Eddie clearly from my childhood. He was in my class at Green Village Road School. In sixth grade I sat in the back of the classroom and Eddie sat behind me and kept me entertained the whole year. He was lots of fun and so friendly with a wonderful smile. I ran into him from time to time when I was still living in Madison. I always knew him immediately, even though his signature red hair turned white, because he had the exact same beautiful smile. I loved chatting with him and remembering the old days. Its so sad to realize I'll never see him again.

I will miss you Eddie. You used to take an interest in my weird projects that I created across the street. We had a beer together once in your driveway and I told you about the formative years of Glacier Hills. How the Spencer’s land was subdivided in the early 1950s and your house was bought by Ralph Luers. It was not even dry-walled at that point. You told me about your early career in construction. It sounded interesting.

Eddie was our crossing guard at Ridgedale/Walnut for years. He’d cross my kids on their way to and from CAS and MJS, and even my husband on the way to the train. He’d always have a big smile and genuine greeting or conversation. He’d call my daughter “Smiley” and would tease me about eating my apples every afternoon pick up. If he saw me walking while he was driving around in his big white truck, he’d always wave and usually stop to catch up. We were all so saddened to hear about Eddie’s passing. We’ll miss him.
