Obituary of John Gaita

Giovanni “John” Gaita, a longtime resident of Chatham, died peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2020 at Morristown Medical Center. He was 87.

John was born in Avellino, Montefredane, Italy on June 19, 1933 into a family of seven children. He often recalled the beauty of Italy and the fond memories he had of growing up there. He married his beloved wife, Dora Ines Gaita (née Aquino) on December 29, 1961. John and Dora emigrated to the United States in the late 1969 and settled in Chatham in 1976 where the couple raised their daughter, Emily.

John had a long career with public service, working with PSE&G in Summit as a heavy equipment operator for over 25 years, prior to his retirement in 1995. He took great pride in maintaining his home and he enjoyed gardening, winemaking and gatherings with dear friends and family. John also had a quiet, yet strong faith. He and his family were longtime parishioners of St. Patrick RC Church in Chatham.

John is predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Antonio & Sabbino Gaita; two sisters, Lucia and Virginia Gaita. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dora Ines Gaita (née Aquino); his dear daughter, Emily Gaita; one brother, Ciro Gaita; one sister, Elisa Bianco; several nieces, nephews & dear friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to celebrate John’s life held on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison.
