Obituary of Delsada I. Bent

Delsada I. Bent, a longtime Newark resident, entered into rest on Monday, September 7, 2020, at University Medical Center in Newark surrounded by the love of her family. She was 83.

Delsada Ianthe Burger, daughter of Frank Burger and Deloris Hawthorne, was born on January 19, 1937 in Morant Bay, St. Thomas, Jamaica. She was raised in Jamaica where she had five of her children. Eventually, Delsada moved to England where she had three more children. Delsada’s work experience included being a hair model and stylist, volunteering as support for an early elementary student, a home caretaker and a paralegal secretary. Delsada alternated spending her time between England and the United States, before permanently settling in Newark, NJ where she served the elderly community as a Certified Nurses Aid.

Delsada had a deep love for her family and the Lord. She was sassy, sometimes sarcastic, and had an infectious sense of humor. Delsada had an incredible zest for life and loved dancing, singing and worshipping the Lord. She was a dedicated member of the Liberty Gospel Assembly. When she was able to, she loved sewing and wearing  African print clothing. She loved soups, Jamaican Beef Patty and much like a British woman, required her food and tea to be extremely hot.

Delsada’s family meant the world to her and were always in her prayers. She was comforted in her last days by being wrapped in the love of her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Delsada was predeceased by her two dear sisters. She is survived by her brother, Neville, and her children Sonia, Fritz and his wife Amoy, Claudette, Sharon, Rittchie, Dean and his wife, Anja, Martin, and Lorén. She also is blessed to also have 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, grand nephews and nieces, friends, and her church family members. She will also be greatly missed by her loving care giver, Emily, who went above and beyond to give Delsada the kindest and loving care for many years. Her family is very grateful for all the care and love she received from her friends, caregivers, doctors and nurses over the years. May you all be richly blessed for the love, sacrifice and service towards her.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to celebrate Delsada’s life held on Friday, September 25, 2020 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison. A funeral service for family and close friends will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 9:45AM at the funeral home.
