I am Living in FL since 2004 when I left Madison after serving on the Madison Borough Council & on a trip back home I ran into Sam at Main Street Subs where I always stop for the “sloppy joes” and to say hi to the locals there. Officer Jerry Mantone was also in the deli at that visit and he let me know that Sammy was following up on my concerns and reasons for resigning from the Council in 2002. Sam smiled at me knowingly from his table and I knew he would do the right thing. His sons VJ and Sebastian went to school with my kids, I knew their Mom too. Sam did beautiful stone masonry work at my home on Niles Ave. He turned a front stairway into an easier staircase and landing that allowed my handicapped Mother In Law and later my father to access my home. Years earlier back in the early 1970’s I worked briefly for a former boss at Madison National Bank and had occasion to eat at Sam’s great restaurant the PS PUB. I have every respect for the contributions Sam and all his family gave from their hearts to the Borough of Madison. I appreciated his strong support when I served on the Council. To his family I offer my sincerest sympathies on the loss of a great Dad. May belief in God support your hearts at this difficult time. God Bless. Sincerely, Peachie Attonito

I knew Sammy in junior high and high school, and worked on several class reunions with him. His trademark, even as a child, was a cheerful disposition and a smile. I will never think of him without seeing his smiling face. Rest in peace, Sammy.

Sam was the first teammate that yelled at me on the football field. My first varsity game, 1957, his message, delivered loudly ( of course) and emphatically was simply " Kill Him " referring to the opposing team quarterback. I have recalled Sam's instructions many times over the years.
Sammy played with great energy and enthusiasm; at times, particularly on defense, he was almost demonic in his approach. He was a team leader; a highly respected one. He senior year he was the team leader.
Some 50 years or so later we caught up at several of the lunch or dinner receptions given for the coaches and players over the 2011-2018 period. From our conversations it was obvious that Sam had remained true to his convictions. I regretted then that we hadn't stayed in touch over the years.
" You Design IT; WE Build IT bounces around in my head. R.I.P. Sam.
