I met Arny in 1998 when he went to Monterrey (Nuevo Leon, Mexico) to visit my supervisor. He was very approachable and took the time to listen and to answer all the naive questions and more from a master student. Ever since he became the person to go whenever I needed help. I only had to send him the list of articles that I needed and I'd get it almost right away. He was a true mentor who, for two decades, always had kind words of support and advice no matter what. I'm speechless and I don't know what else to say except that he'll be dearly missed!!!
My sincere condolences to his family and to everybody who knew Arny. His passing is sad news for us all!
With warm wishes,
Marcela

I met Arny while I was a biosafety officer at M.I.T. While many members of the faculty could be a bit prickly, Arny was alway kind, gracious, ready to spend time talking. My condolences to his family and the legions of his friends who will keenly miss this wonderful gentleman.

I met Arnie when he came to Lederle Labs in In 1976 as a consultant. I was responsible for part of the fermentation assay group. He met with the managers in the Antibiotic Discovery Department. We each presented our current programs and the our ideas for future bioassays we were developing. He came up to me after my presentation and said “my boy” you are wasting your time at Lederle and that you should look into academic opportunities.
From that point in time he would always address me as My Boy.
Within a couple of months. I was approached by MIT about a new position. I was invited to create the first biosafety/ laboratory safety program in an academic center in the world.
What I did not know was that my post doctoral advisor Frank Young and Arnie were friends as was the faculty member who was responsible for advising the search committee Maury Fox. Needless to say I accepted the invitation and immediately became a member of Arnie’s Army. Arnie was my mentor, collaborator and most of all a friend. The frequent and sometimes spontaneous trips to the Muddy Charles where he would hold court became an important part of my education.
He was a major consultant in the creation of the biotech industry. He consulted for Cetus and when they had difficulty with the Emeryville town council over genetic engineering, he recommended me, Cetus was my first consultancy and because of Arnie, I had the opportunity to consult for many other companies over the years. For the seventeen years I was with MIT, he was always there for me,
He was my colleague, advisor and friend. He was an outstanding scientist who was revered by all who knew him. He was there for all of us.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Demain (Arny). He was an amazing person, scientist, professor, and friend. His boundless, enterprising spirit and kind and generous nature will never be forgotten. Evident in everything he did was how very much he loved his family, his work, and his colleagues. His life is an inspiration, and I will miss him dearly. All my best to his family at this sad time.
