Obituary of Florence S. McCullough

Florence S. McCullough, a longtime Madison resident, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 surrounded by the love of her family. She was 82.

Florence was born in Hillsboro, Alabama on April 4, 1937 to the late George Porter and Phyllis Wheatley Steele.  She migrated to NJ in the late 1950’s and it was there where she would meet her beloved husband, Willie McCullough. The couple were married on April 30, 1961 and settled in Madison, where they raised their cherished family.

Florence was a woman of steadfast faith in God and everything she did in her life was for the benefit of her family. She was a longtime member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Madison and later became a faithful member of, Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Boonton Township.

Florence worked tirelessly as an entrepreneur while her children were in school during the day. She established Quality Day Care and Learning Center, a daycare in Madison for children. Educating children was her passion and she operated her business for many years. Her children fondly look back with pride and amazement that their mother's care and compassion that extended beyond the wall of their home. Florence established many ties in the community and served in many ways, from serving as a Den Leaders for Scouts and emerging as one of the Founders of the NJ Association of Black Educators, to serving in church as a Stewardess. Her life is defined by the many lives she touched and served.

Florence was dedicated to her family and she adored her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed nature and spending time outdoors. She also had a strong appreciation for quality and value, which she instilled in her family.

Florence’s good nature, warm heart and elegance will be missed tremendously by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Florence was predeceased by her brothers, George P. Steele, Jr., Willie Casey Steele, James Leonard Steele, and her sisters, Mary Elizabeth, Phyllis, Maude Esther Steele-Sweatt .

She is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Willie McCullough of Madison, one son, Daniel McCullough (Patty Ledbetter) of Madison; one daughter, Yolanda Carnes and her husband, Steven of Aurora, IL, and three cherished grandchildren, Dylan Carnes, Xavier McCullough and Colin Carnes.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a homegoing celebration of life for Stevanna beginning promptly at 11:00am on Monday, June 10, 2019 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 4 Church Rd, Boonton, NJ, led by the Rev. Dr. Kimberly Credit. A private family visitation will be held from 9:00am to 10:30am at the church prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Morristown.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Florence’s memory to the Mt. Zion Baptist Church - Robert O. Stafford Scholarship Fund,  4 Church Rd, Booton Township, NJ 07005.
