Obituary of Maria Basic

Maria Basic, of Chatham Township, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at Father Hudson House Hospice in Elizabeth after a long illness. She was 72.

Maria was born in Pazin, Croatia and was a longtime resident of Chatham. She was a very skilled seamstress and embroiderer, working in Linden and Rahway for many years prior to her retirement.

Maria cherished her three beloved grandchildren and was so proud of them. She had a big heart, loved animals and will be deeply missed by all that loved and knew her.

Funeral services will begin at 9:00AM on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison, followed by a 10:00AM Liturgy of Christian Burial led by Fr. Lemmuel Camacho celebrated at Corpus Christi RC Church, Chatham. Interment will follow at St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Madison. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather to celebrate Maria’s life at a visitation held on Wednesday from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at the funeral home.

Maria is survived by her daughter, Zeljka Rato and her husband, Michael of Chatham Township; her son, Ivan Basic and his wife, Danielle of East Stroudsburg, PA; her sister, Smiljana Diminic and her husband, Denis of Commack, NY; and her three cherished grandchildren, Alexander, Katarina & Scarlett.

Charitable contributions may be made in Maria’s to memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
