Obituary of Thomas J. Murphy "Murph"

Thomas J. Murphy “Murph”, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the age of 85.

Thomas was born in Jersey City on November 11, 1933 to the late Thomas and Dorothy Murphy. He was a longtime resident of Bayonne prior to moving to Madison to be closer to his family. After his honorable service to his country in the US Army, Thomas began his career with Western Electric of Kearny and was there for over 30 years prior to his retirement. After retiring, Thomas dedicated a great deal of his time to driving the Bayonne senior citizen’s bus. He enjoyed helping others and was greatly appreciated by the elderly community of Bayonne for his dependability and service.

Thomas was well known for his love of driving and road trips. He enjoyed driving through the scenic areas of Morris County and being outdoors. Thomas was a supporter of pet adoption and was very proud of his dog, who he rescued from a shelter. He was an avid sports fan, especially the NY Giants, Rangers & Mets. Thomas was a humble man with a heart of gold. He loved buying scratch off tickets and traveling back to Bayonne to spend time with his dear friends of many years. He will be deeply missed by all those that loved and knew him.

Thomas leaves behind his beloved wife, Grayce Murphy as well as his four daughters, Eileen Murphy of Phoenix, AZ, Beth Colligan and her husband, Jerry of Madison, Maureen Harwood and her husband, Christopher of Fairbanks, AK, & Peggy Edwards and her husband, Peter of London, England; three cherished grandchildren, Kasey, Patrick & Erin; and many dear friends.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a visitation to celebrate Thomas’ life from 2:00PM to 6:00PM on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison, with a 4:00PM funeral service led by Fr. Alex Santora held during the visitation. Cremation will be held privately at the family’s request.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in Thomas’ memory to Inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care Fund c/o the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center, 475 South Street, 1st floor, Morristown NJ 07960 or online at f4mmc.org.
