Obituary of Michael Joseph Scanlon

Michael Joseph Scanlon, of Manchester, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 4, 2017 at the age of 94.

Michael leaves behind his beloved wife of 64 years, Mary Scanlon (nee McLoughlin); his three sons, Michael Scanlon of Chatham and his wife Irene, John Scanlon of Wood Ridge and his wife Mary Ellen, & Brendan Scanlon of Charlotte, NC; and one brother, Patrick Scanlon of Great Britain. Michael was also blessed with six cherished grandchildren, Michael and his wife Jennifer, Erin and her husband Tyler, Ryan and his wife Kristin, Corie, David and his wife Ali, & Kristina.

Michael was born and raised in County Sligo, Ireland. He moved from Ireland to Vermont in the late 1940's and shortly after to Jersey City, where he and his beloved wife, Mary, settled and raised their three sons. In their retirement, Michael and Mary purchased a farm in County Sligo and moved back to Ireland for 12 years. They moved back to NJ in 2000 to be closer to their family and have lived in Manchester since.

Michael was a production manager with the American Can Company of Jersey City for over 25 years, before retiring. He was proud to be an American and took great pride in his Irish heritage. He enjoyed Irish music, dancing and sharing humorous stories from throughout his life with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He was a warm and kind person with a good heart that will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

Funeral services will begin at 9:00AM on Friday, December 8, 2017 at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison, followed by a 10:30AM Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Patrick's RC Church in Chatham. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to celebrate Michael's life on Thursday from 2PM to 4PM & 7PM to 9 PM at the funeral home.
