Very sorry to hear of Joe's passing. We moved my dad into Sunrise of Madison in April last year after the passing of my mom his wife of 70 years - in Florida. This move was very stressful for him butJoe became a good friend very quickly after arrival. He made my dad feel comfortable by having many conversations with him and by inviting him to his table in the dining room which really helped in the transition. I am so very glad our family and especially dad had the opportunity to meet and know him, although much too briefly. My condolences to his family, you have lost a treasure of a man. Very sincerely, David Burde

I first worked with Joe in the 1960s, during a major rehabilitation of Newark Airport. (Years later first he, and later I, had the pleasure of managing that airport). Joe was a fine and very talented person: a pleasure to know and to work with.
God Bless his Family.

My memories go back longer than I like to admit since we lived next door to each other and he was two years older than I. Our fathers were in business together for many years so ours was like a combined family, along with his sister and mine. We shared many holidays together as well as many happy events.
His humor was one of his greatest assets.

Dear Vanacore Family, please accept my condolences on the passing of Joe. He was a very special gentleman.
Like others of the PANYNJ family, I had the privilege of working with him and appreciated his guidance, support and advice. He was a mentor and friend. My thoughts are with all of you and I will pray for him and your Mother.

In all my years of being around Mr. V. I don’t think I ever once saw him without a bemused smile on his face. Never once did I see him angry. Never once did I see him be unkind.
One of my favorite memories with him was on a snowy winter night when I was in high school. I was driving to the Vanacore house and my car began sliding out of control. It began heading right at one of the Vanacores’ neighbors, who was at his mailbox. Luckily I was going slow and luckily when my lights came on him he got out of the way. No one was hurt.
I went into the Vanacore house and relayed the story. I explained in detail what happened and at the end, a little put off, said, “The guy was mad!”
There was a healthy beat and Joe calmly said, “You did almost kill the guy.” And we both cracked up from our bellies. He was laughing so hard he could barely talk, but added, “I mean, the guy was getting his mail, you almost plowed into him with your car, and he got mad. What a jerk!”
We were both crying in the kitchen. It was just the best.
He was the greatest. I loved that guy. I will miss him.
Hugs to all the Vanacores, who have been through a lot lately. If any family can endure hard times, it is yours.
I love you.
Rob

I join with many members of the Port Authority community in extending my sincere condolences to the Vanacore family at this time.
I was privileged to know Joe and to work with him during my career at the Port Authority. I saw him as my mentor during the latter stages of my career and he brought me into his department - -Tunnels , Bridges and Terminals - - before being promoted to a higher position in the front office. In every respect he was a true professional whose patience and overall demeanor earned him the respect of all who knew him. He will be sorely missed - -but well remembered - - by all who knew him.

I was privileged to work on several committees with Joe Vanacore when he was head of PB&T, and I was Chief Economist at the Port Authority. Joe was always a pleasure work with, always a gentleman, always a good listener, and always offered great advice.
My condolences to all of his family.

To all of Joseph Vanacore's family:
I just wanted to extend my condolences to all of you in the loss of Joe. While I only had the pleasure of his company a few times, I know how close he was to all of you and I know how much he will be missed. I enjoyed the conversations we had.
Joe's bio on this site was very enlightening and moving when I read it. He definitely packed a lot into his 90 years.
With my deepest sympathy,
Lance Morrow
