Obituary of Thelma Trusty

Thelma Trusty, a beloved lifelong resident of Madison, peacefully passed away on Monday, December 30, 2024 at the age of 93, in the warm embrace of her family.

Although she was known by many names such as Thelma, Mother, Grams, Grandma, Mother Thelma, TA, she was also known for her boundless kindness, unwavering faith, and incredible capacity to love. Thelma has left an indelible imprint on the hearts of all who knew her.

Born October 20, 1931 in North Carolina to Daisy McDaniels-Phillips, Thelma moved to Madison as a young child. When her mother passed away in 1941, Thelma was embraced and raised by her loving Aunt Bert and Uncle Raymond. From a young age, Thelma’s life was a testament to resilience and the power of family bonds.

As a graduate of Madison High School, Thelma excelled not only as a track star but also as a majorette, radiating a joy and energy that drew people to her. Her love for music and dance was a reflection of her vibrant spirit. After high school, she devoted many years of her life to her career at Bell, where her strong work ethic and loyalty earned her the admiration of all who worked alongside her.

Thelma was predeceased by her brother, Preston Phillips; her precious daughter, Deborah Seamans; and her beloved granddaughter, Heather Bonnell. Though her heart ached from these losses, she carried on with grace, finding comfort in the love of her family. She is survived by those who will forever hold her memory close: her grandson, Saint John Forschner; great-grandchildren, Arica Bonnell, Douglas Bonnell Jr., Mariah and Raina Lefkowitz, Elijah and Jeremiah Jones, Mia Guild, Jasmine James, and Justice Forschner; great-great-grandchildren, Kassidy, Armani, Anthony, and Alaisa; and her chosen grandchildren, Megan Reilly, Jamie Reilly, Donald Link, and Eva, Ian, Sloane, and Annie Rough. They will carry forward her legacy of deep love, faith, and strength.

Thelma’s life was deeply rooted in her faith, and she was an active, devoted member of Bethel AME Church in Madison. Her faith was not merely a part of her life—it was the foundation of everything she did. She believed in the power of love, the strength of community, and the importance of lifting others up. Whether it was through her warm hugs, her thoughtful words, or her beloved tradition of handing out mints to church members and friends, Thelma found joy in bringing smiles to others. Even as she faced challenges the last couple months, she continued this simple yet meaningful gesture while in the nursing home.

Thelma Trusty’s life was a beautiful reflection of grace, humility, and love. She loved without measure, forgave without hesitation, and gave freely, expecting nothing in return. Her presence brightened every room, and her absence leaves a space that can never be filled. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit will live on forever in the hearts of all whose lives she touched. Her legacy of love, faith, and kindness will continue to inspire and guide us. She will remain a beacon of light, and the beauty of her soul will never be forgotten.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the visitation for Thelma to be held on Friday, January 3, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Bethel AME Church, 53 Central Avenue, Madison.
