Life is so fragile and unpredictable.
I always remember Jesse fondly. His kindness and warmth touched so many lives. It’s not easy to accept that Jesse is gone. He was a unique individual who was humble, intelligent, friendly, humorous, knowledgeable, and able to think critically and creatively. He will be sorely missed. 有的人生命宛若流星，虽然短暂但是光明闪烁，璀璨夺目。他用自己的生命之树，摇动庆梅你这棵树；用自己这朵洁白的云，推动妻子女儿们这朵朵白云；用他一个人的灵魂，唤醒众人的灵魂。

Jesse was a remarkable individual who dedicated so much of his talents and efforts to serving the community. I first met him during his tenure at the Millburn school board when he championed the popular issue of school closures for Diwali and Lunar New Year. He was successful in his efforts through diplomacy and perseverance. He was also actively involved in township issues and elections. During the pandemic, he was a key organizer of the campaign in our town to raise awareness on Asian hate. His thoughtfulness, cheerful attitude and friendly demeanor won him many admirers in the town. I speak for many when I say I’m deeply saddened by his early demise and will miss him. His smiling face will forever stay in my memory.

Dear Jesse,
Each day, I am still processing you leaving us and am always just reminded of how special of a person you were. Most people are simply good at one thing (eg. work), but you were able to live multiple lives in your short 53 years.
You were able to have a great professional life, raise a wonderful family with three daughters, serve the community through the Board of Education, and also be an elite marathon runner. It really is incredible how much you were able to do in your time and what is even more impressive however, is the person that you were. You were always so kind and giving towards the Luo family and you felt very much like an uncle to us.
In many ways, my life has been very much dictated by you and your family, as your parents were the ones who recommended my parents be married before moving to the US, which allowed for them to have a different life and for me to have siblings. Thank you so much for your kindness, humor, and memories. I will always cherish them and I am glad that you are finally at peace now.

Jesse和庆梅都是我们在广州的中学同学，从认识他们起，他们一直都是善良有爱，热心分享的人。他们大学毕业后出国继续深造，在那个还没有互联网的时代，他们还不忘经常邮寄书信照片回国与我们分享在美国的生活学习点滴。及至我们移居多伦多，Jesse又带着怀着二女儿的庆梅开车不辞劳苦从New Jersey过来看望我们。更别说每次我们去New Jersey，都是他们热情招待我们在他家留宿。2008年他们又热心组织在他们家进行中学同学聚会，当时同学欢聚一堂的情景还历历在目。Jesse谈吐风趣，学识丰富，谦虚待人，他不吝分享他在财经方面的知识，与他交谈能从中得益不少。后来他们夫妻热衷跑步，经常在朋友圈分享在各地跑马的经历，激励我也开始热爱跑步。Jesse心爱他的家人，对朋友关怀备至, 热心公益，如此优秀的人这么早离开我们，天妒英才，真是很心痛，万般不舍！ Jesse， 一路走好，你会永远留在我们的心中。

1994年在Yale计算机系认识刘健翔，他性格开朗，为人友善，很快我们就成为朋友。后来在纽约他和卜庆梅请我去他们家吃螃蟹。健翔告诉我哪些部分能吃，哪些部分不要吃。至今记忆犹新。现惊闻健翔早逝，让我倍感惋惜，心中充满了悲痛。愿健翔一路走好！ —黄健涛

Jesse is a remarkable individual who left an incredible mark on our community. He was not just someone who ran more than 20 marathons. His passion for running was more than a pursuit of medals, he embodied the spirit of perseverance and dedication, pushing himself further not only on the racecourse but in every aspect of life.
Jesse was more than just a runner. He served as a valued member of the Board of Education. He brought a unique perspective and tireless energy to the table, always advocating for what he believed would benefit our children and future generations.
His legacy extends beyond his accomplishments. He is known for his humor and ability to brighten any room. he had a gift for finding humor in the ordinary and bringing smiles to the faces of those around him.
Whether it was pounding the pavement, advocating for our schools, or simply sharing a laugh, Jesse lived life to the fullest. He may have crossed the finish line of his life journey, and his final marathon may be over, but his spirit will continue to inspire us to run ever forward, chasing dreams, and embracing life's every adventure.

You were our 大佬, Big Brother, one in every circle that we overlapped: cultural, running, community and public service. You could have been the spotlight on and off the course, yet you always shone the light on others. Even when you were dishing wisdom or tips on running, public service or life in general, you made me feel there was room to grow and not a deficiency or inadequacy to make whole. An envy of every nerd, your intellect was equally matched by your outsized humor, charisma and integrity. I love speaking Cantonese to you and our common tongue brought me closer to my own upbringing in Hong Kong. We connected for first time at the Anti-Asian Hate rally/run in Union Square.
You brought your family to this loosely organized event that drew hundreds and thousands. There was no water after miles of running under the sun and we shared the few bottles of water we were able to find. From that day on, you weren’t just a runner — you were someone who cared for a greater cause. When you found out I was running for public office, you were one of the first to support me, donated to my campaign and even though you were undergoing treatment, you generously shared your sharing time, experience and network of support with me. 喂 ，Jesse 大佬，一路好走

突闻噩耗，震惊悲恸。望庆梅姐和女儿们节哀保重！最早知道Jesse，因为他是蜜镇第一位华裔BOE学委，开先河之人，必有过人之处。之后有机会和 Jesse 交错行径，果然名下无虚。疫情之初，我拉了个给需要隔离的蜜镇居民送菜的“携手过冬群”，Jesse 在台前幕后给予了很多帮助，包括数次深夜帮我修改要对外发放的宣传材料，以及做为熟悉蜜镇格局大势的人，提出的各种细致建议。最让我感动的，是终于出现了第一位求助者时，疫情形势严峻，疫苗遥遥无期；我揽下第一单“生意”后，Jesse 私下联系我，说他可以帮我给那家人送菜（尽管 Jesse 和庆梅姐有四位老人要照顾，尤其需要格外小心）。特殊时期仗义援手，我永远铭记！之前LM姐还说起下次一起喝酒，不成想已没有机会。Jesse, 天堂再聚！

Jesse 是我尊敬和喜爱的长跑爱好者。我和他于2015年5月因跑步相识，从那以后，我们有一起训练，一起跑马拉松比赛。我印象中，9年来他一直坚持长跑，寒冬酷暑他都从不间断，他有一张张全副武装在冰天雪地长跑的照片还历历在目。
Jesse 是一位跑群热心组织者。他创建了活跃在新泽西中部的“东奔西跑” （We Run)。作为“东奔西跑”的早期群员，我记得那时他和庆梅一起为大家印制队服， 组织大家去湖边绕圈，去南山刷坡，交流跑步经验，使大家从中获益。
Jesse 是一位有爱心的良师益友。他对非常乐意分享和帮助别人。我上个月去他家探望他，他身上体现的乐观和坚强非常令我钦佩！那天不知不觉几乎1小时就过去了，感觉意犹未尽。本来想波马后再去看他， 不料噩耗传来。
愿Jesse 一路走好… 庆梅及家人节哀顺变。

Jesse - I am at an utter loss for words other than to say you will be missed. The impact that you had on those around you, on MSH, on the Chinese community, is palpable and immeasurable. I grew up in a Chinese American circle that emphasized school, jobs, promotions, but often for selfish purposes like money, reputation, prestige. You were the first to exemplify so vividly what it meant to be selfless. To give back. To pay it forward. To take on the tiring and thankless job of a BOE member is admirable, to represent a community to the school board, and the school board back to the community, is herculean. And you did it all with such grace and professionalism and careful thought.
I will miss our chats and midtown coffees, I will miss your guidance, your wit, your humor, your inspiration.
You made us better as a community. We stand on the shoulders of giants. Godspeed.
To Jesse's family - we are all behind you at this time. It takes a village, and there is an enormous village here. Sending good thoughts your way.

怀念Jesse
认识Jesse是在2019年东奔西跑的一次群跑时，那时听说他跑得很快，经常看到他一个人在前面跑，我只能在他热身或者慢跑时靠近他。记得是第一次认识他时，在Lontaka的小路上，他问我有没有参加比赛，比赛成绩如何，我都一一作了答复，他听了之后说：你的全马成绩与其它的成绩不相符啊。从他那里听到了周跑量的说法，让我渐渐进入马拉松的正规训练。
2019年我和Jesse一起参加了Brooklyn半马，赛后Jesse让大家写个小作文谈谈自己的感想，我的标题是：差38秒变大神。害怕我的标题太过于吹牛皮，我把小作文发给Jesse征询一下他的意见，他说那是我的感想很好，我也就不自量力的投稿了。
2019年纽马时，Jesse做啦啦队，赛后他跟我说，比赛没多久他就跟啦啦队说Yale跑快了，应该慢点。那年我在后面几迈抽着筋跑下的，非常痛苦。看到Jesse每次跑马都是慢起步，我也慢慢开始有些体会，目前仍在学习中。
2022年通过Jesse的介绍我开始参与了为一些赛事做兔子，第一次兔子就是与Jesse搭档做1:45。由于第12的mile标志不对，在跑第13迈时为了赶时间快了，以至于到了终点不敢过终点线，成为大家的一个笑柄。
对大多数人来说，Jesse是跑马的前辈，大佬，他也是我的良师益友，他的音容笑貌经常在脑海浮现，我会常常怀念他。Jesse一路走好。

再多说一下刘建翔在2014年的学区委员竞选。我在2014年夏天告诉刘建翔，要从County Election Board 处获得Voters List 和 Voting History. Jesse 的竞选团队经过一番周折，拿到这些数据。在8-10月份之间，刘建翔竞选团队展开了一场有众多华人家长助选的竞选。后来在新泽西州广为流传和推广的“扫街”一词便源于这次竞选活动。刘建翔高票当选。

我在2013年当选West Windsor-Plainsboro学区委员。你在2014年初决定参选Millburn 学区委员，带了竞选团队几位骨干来West Windsor 讨论竞选情况。我们成为朋友。
2014年夏秋之际一场多位华人参与的竞选后，你光荣当选学区委员。后我们有过多次合作。在多次会议上坐在一起。
后来你又光荣当选学区董事会Vice President。成为新泽西州所有学区第一位华人Vice President，是华人之光。
你的智慧、热心、幽默，令人难忘。你将永远活在我们心中。
