I am devastated to say that I'm just now finding out about Matt's passing. He was a dear friend and trusted voice of reason since we met during our GMU days so long ago.
Matt and I took great pride in running our college radio station, WGMU, together. From the first day we met, we clicked as if we'd known each other for years. He was always dressed meticulously, standing out amongst our fellow students who preferred to wear sweatpants around campus. We shared a love of music and took ownership of "the little radio station that could": we gave the WGMU office a facelift, organizing the thousands of CDs and boxes of old papers that had been laying around for years. We even painted the office ourselves, I believe we settled on a bold green and yellow to reflect our school colors. Matt was innovative, ushering our station's music broadcast to the internet, way before anyone else was doing that! He nurtured my shortlived career as a DJ, setting me up with a DJ gig at the French Connection store where he worked in Georgetown. I was paid in clothes at the end of the night, naturally. One other college highlight was getting the opportunity to represent WGMU at a college radio station conference in Kansas City. I'll never forget how much we laughed on that trip.
After college, we both left Virginia for the NYC area. I moved to Brooklyn for a year, and ultimately landed in Los Angeles to pursue a career in television production. Matt and I stayed in contact, and often connected for brunch at the hot new restaurant du jour when I visited NYC a couple of times per year. Matt and I shared a love for food and an absolute obsession with coffee. We bonded over our distaste for anyone that mispronounced the word espresso as "ex-presso."
As the years clicked on, Matt and I lived very different lives but always kept in touch. As I worked my way up the production ladder, I got married and had 2 kids, while back on the East Coast, he had a vibrant dating life and chased new career goals. I sometimes wondered if he would ever settle on one career, he just had so much curiosity and wanted to know everything about everything! When he finally landed on a nursing degree, it became clear that he'd found his calling. He took great pleasure in watching me squirm as he shared gruesome stories from the ER that somehow didn't seem to phase him one bit. He made me cackle with his storytelling and deadpan delivery.
The last time I saw Matt was in November 2022, and we had one of the best days ever. I was shooting a show in New York and had a day off to explore the Meatpacking District. He came into the city and I wasn't sure what he'd be up for, given his recent health issues. He showed up as the Matt I knew and loved, and didn't want me to worry about him in the least. We walked for hours: first, snapping selfies around Little Island, then shopping at some cute boutiques, and eventually settling into a booth at the diner at the Standard Hotel, where we shared cocktails with another dear friend of mine. He gushed about his (then) boyfriend, and his new life on the farm. I couldn't believe that city boy Matt was living the real life Green Acres, but he truly had never seemed happier. As we parted ways, we held each other tight and promised to do it again very soon.
When I was back in New York in April of 2023, our schedules didn't line up for us to see each other. Looking back, I regret that I didn't try harder to make the time. As much as it devastates me to know that I missed my last opportunity to see him and say goodbye, I am comforted by the memories we shared together over the last 20 years. Matt's light continues to shine bright in everyone's lives that he touched, including mine. I will miss him dearly, and I'm sending strength and comfort to all of the friends and family who continue feel his absence every day. Love you always, Matty. -Kitty (Lyon) Gambel

I did not know him as well as others but he definitely stood out to me. Sending prayers to Matt's husband and family during this difficult time.

I had the privilege of working with Matthew many years ago before he completed nursing school. He was an operating room assistant at the ambulatory surgery center Morristown Medical Center. Not only was it clear he was awesome in his role and going places in his career, he made every day bright and fun with his energy and sense of humor. I’m beyond sad to hear of his passing. Sending my condolences to all who love Matthew

I worked with Matt for almost 10 years and always looked forward to getting his take on things. He loved to learn new things and then use that knowledge to solve problems. Our last exchange was the day before his graduation, I didn't realize then that it would be our last. Matt lived a very productive life in his short time on earth but it has and will continue to impact us through his legacy. Deepest condolences to his family. RIP Matt

I never had the privilege of meeting Matt. I came to know of him through his dear friend, Donna Flynn. He was full of life and had so much more to give the world and I am saddened that he had so little time. However, from everything I have heard and read, he touched many lives, those that he knew, and like me, those that he didn’t. To Michael, Matt’s, beloved husband, Matt’s mom and all the lives that he touched, I offer my deepest sympathy. Through his good works on earth he was an angel to many and now he will be an angel who will continue to watch over us. Rest in peace, Dr. Matt.

Matt and I met through NNJ AACN about ten years ago. We instantly clicked and shared many memories. Whether it was a clinical, technical or personal matter, Matt was caring, funny, smart and always had a witty comment. He was a great colleague and friend who loved his family. Matt will be sorely missed by many. Love and miss you my friend. Save me a good seat. ❤️

Matt was the ultimate defininition of intelligence, wisdom, humor, friendliness. He was ahead of his times, always a visionary, with remarkable values and generosity. He was a great listener, a loyal friend and an amazing source of inspiration. I feel priviledged to call him my friend and I cherish our sweet memories together, our common love for culture, coffee, hot yoga and Broadway shows.
I rest assured knowing he received all the love and care he deserved and I like to believe he’s smiling at us while making espressos and dancing to Mike’s music!

I met Matthew through Mike. He introduced me to him at my job. They would always come look for me when they traveled and I looked forward to it every time. He was such nice and genuine person. I will miss your smile, your hugs, the laughs we had and all the genuine conversations. Honored I got to know his pure heart and how happy he made Mike. Never seen Mike so happy until he met Matthew and I've known Mike for a very long time. I knew they were soulmates the first time I met him, I told Mike this. You're truly going to be missed Matthew but will always cherish all the memories we shared ❤.

I met Matt just a couple of years ago and had the pleasure of taking care of him. I can’t even explain the joy that he has brought to my life in such a short period of time. I was always amazed by his courage, optimism and endless smiles- just an absolute joy. He was truly one of the best people I’ve ever met. Rest in peace Matt. The world shines a little less bright without you in it. I know that I will always carry a piece of you in my heart. Sending so much love to all of your loved ones.

I have known Matt, since I was in middle school. I was such a quiet nerdy girl and he was so fun and friendly! I will never forget our classes together. You always made me laugh and put a smile on my face. I am so proud of all his amazing accomplishments, but most proud that he was my friend. I am so sorry to his husband, family, co-workers, and friends. He was just one of the best you’d ever find.

I did not know Matt as long as others but i have Known him
For about five years. I met Him through his husband, Michael and knew that Michael found the one! With getting to know him, i was able to learn of his passion to help others along with how fun and creative he was. Matt always invited me to be apart of events or activities and there are so many loving memories with him. One of my favorites is going to a haunted house in Wharton area with him and his husband. He kept pushing me in the front of all of the boys and made me laugh sooo much! I love Matt and his entire personality. He will me missed ❤️

I met Matt in Pre-K in 1987. We remained friends all through school. I have great memories with him in HHS ski club. I hadn’t seen him in many years but we kept in touch regularly via text and he’d also send me funny memes on instagram. We had tried to make plans recently but it never happened, which I regret. I wasn’t aware of ALL of his amazing accomplishments and I teared up again reading his obituary. Life is way too short. To all of his family, friends, husband, coworkers, I am so sorry for this great loss RIP, Matt. You’ll be greatly missed and you’re loved!

I was so happy when you found your soulmate, Mike. The love you two shared was noticed in every glance, smile and act. Rest in peace my dear friend.
