Obituary of Arthur Sgobbo

Arthur Sgobbo, formerly of Madison, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026, at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville surrounded by his loving family at the age of 80.

Born in Newark, Arthur was the beloved son of the late Otto Sgobbo and Catherine Messina. He spent most of his life in Belleville and the Forest Hill section of Newark before making his home in Madison in 2019.

A proud United States Marine Corps veteran, Arthur honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he devoted 34 years to the Essex County Department of Corrections, where he rose through the ranks to become a Sergeant before retiring in 2004. He was respected by his colleagues for his dedication, leadership, and unwavering work ethic.

Arthur had a lifelong passion for music, especially the music of Elvis Presley. His love for Elvis inspired many memorable vacations to Memphis, Tennessee, and Shreveport, Louisiana, where he enjoyed celebrating the music and legacy of his favorite performer. He also treasured spending time with his family, who brought him his greatest joy.

Arthur is survived by his devoted son, Anthony Sgobbo and his wife, Ruth; his beloved daughter, Anita Maria Sgobbo; his cherished granddaughter, Brooke Saggese and her husband, Phil; his sisters, Angela DeNicolas and Francesca Osterberg and her husband, Scott; his cousin, Lilian Cerami and her husband, Carmine; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Catherine; his former wife, Frances Sgobbo; and his longtime companion, Joanne Benedict.

Arthur will be remembered for his service to his country, his distinguished career in law enforcement, his love of family, and the joy he found in music. His strength, loyalty, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the visitation for Arthur on Thursday, August 6, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison.

A 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Vincent Martyr Church, 26 Green Village Road, Madison on Friday, August 7, 2026. For those who are unable to attend the mass in person, please visit www.svmnj.org/livestream-mass

Interment will follow at St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Madison.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Arthur’s memory may be made to the James Burton Foundation in Shreveport, Louisiana, a tribute to his lifelong admiration for Elvis Presley and the music that brought him so much happiness.
