Obituary of Matthew A. Spelker

Matthew A. Spelker, a beloved lifelong resident of Madison, peacefully passed away at home on April 30, 2026, at the age of 58, surrounded by his loving family.

Matt was a remarkable man who embodied kindness, generosity and integrity. As a devoted husband, father, brother, friend, and colleague, he lived a life dedicated to service, always striving to uplift those around him without ever seeking recognition. Known for his quiet strength, many found solace and guidance in his wise counsel.

Matt is survived by his cherished wife of 35 years, Kathie Spelker (née Baklarz); his son, Christopher Spelker; his daughter, Samantha Brennand and her husband Will; and a granddaughter expected very soon. He also leaves behind his devoted brothers, Scott Spelker and his wife Amy, and Mark Spelker and his wife Jocelyn, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a multitude of dear friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Arnold W. and Audrey Spelker.

Born in Irvington, NJ, Matt moved to Madison at a young age, where he was raised alongside his brothers. He graduated from Madison High School in the Class of 1985 and pursued higher education at Dickinson College. A man of diverse talents, Matt began his career as a currency trader on Wall Street, earning respect in the fast-paced world of finance. Yet, his true calling emerged in education; he returned to school to earn his Master’s Degree and eventually his Doctorate in Education from St. Elizabeth’s University.

Matt's educational journey began as a 4th-grade teacher in Millburn, followed by a role as assistant principal at Glenwood Elementary School. He later became the principal and ultimately the Superintendent of Schools in Harding Township. His fair and compassionate nature made him a beloved leader, and in 2025, he was honored as Superintendent of the Year for his dedication to providing a high-quality education and a supportive environment for both students and teachers.

Above all, Matt was a proud father who cherished his family. He looked forward to becoming a grandfather, a role he approached with great enthusiasm. He was known as the “Favorite Uncle,” always finding ways to make his nieces and nephews smile.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Matt contributed to his community through little league coaching in Madison and junior football. He had a passion for golf, which brought him great joy throughout his life.

Matt's legacy of kindness, generosity and service has made a lasting impact on countless lives. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, and all who were fortunate to know him.
