Obituary of Gustave F. Merwin, Sr.

Gustave Frederick Merwin, Sr., a longtime Chatham resident, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026. He was 90 years old.

He is survived by his loving wife, MaryAnn; his children, Gus Merwin, Jr., Bonnie Repko (Steven), and Debbie Beeman (David); his cherished grandchildren, Bobby, Dustin, Keith, Jesse, Kelly, and Colleen; his treasured great-grandchildren Jacob, Penelope, Owen, Beau, Amelia, and Ryder; extended family members and many dear friends who will miss him deeply.

Born on November 19, 1935, in Glen Ridge, Gustave was raised in Verona and later made his home in Chatham, where he lovingly raised his family. He was the son of the late John Merwin and Elizabeth (Steurer) Merwin.

Gustave was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, MaryAnn (Kelly) Merwin. The two met at the Florham Park Skating Rink and were married on November 30, 1957, sharing 68 wonderful years together. He was a nurturing and dedicated father whose love for his family was evident in everything he did.

Gustave dedicated his career to the heavy construction industry as an equipment operator and a proud member of Operating Engineers Union Local 825.  Gustave worked for Gray Supply Corporation in Randolph and enjoyed his later working years farming and building unique stone and wooden structures on the farm. Known for his strong work ethic and steady hands, Gustave took pride in building not just highways and buildings, but a life centered on devotion to his family.

Gustave enjoyed gardening and nature, fishing, riding motorcycles and snowmobiles with his kids, and meticulously caring for his home. He could often be found working in the garage, garden or yard and always made sure there was something for everyone in the house when they needed it. He especially loved dancing the jitterbug with his wife in their younger years and was known for his warm thoughtful spirit.

Gustave will be remembered as a hardworking man with a kind heart; a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose steady presence and caring nature defined his life.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation for Gustave on Thursday, March 5, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at the Fair Mount Cemetery, Chatham.
