Obituary of Rosalba Vergara De Ruiz

Rosalba Vergara de Ruiz, known best as “Abuelita,” passed away peacefully at home in Dover on Monday, January 26, 2026. Rosalba lived surrounded with love in Cali, Colombia and Dover, New Jersey until age 92.

Rosalba was born on March 8, 1933, in Aguadas, Caldas, Colombia. She was one of twenty-four siblings in a blended family rich with music and a spirit of public service. Her brothers were musicians, and Rosalba herself loved to sing and play guitar alongside them. One of her grandson’s inherited the gift of guitar playing and this filled Rosalba with joy. She loved to sing and dance with local musicians and relatives.

Family, public service, and a solid work ethic were deeply meaningful to Rosalba. She inherited her values from her father whom she admired for his service in the Colombian armed forces and as mayor of their hometown. She beamed when speaking about her grandchildren’s public service: One grandchild became a police officer, another a Dover school board and council member, and another a United States Army veteran. She loved her family unconditionally and helped to raise several of her grandchildren both in Colombia and the United States. She loved to tell stories about how hard her children, grandchildren and grandchildren worked to accomplish their goals.

Despite not having a formal education, Rosalba practiced midwifery and nursing in Colombia, caring for others with compassion and skill. On August 7, 1956, she courageously responded to a devastating dynamite explosion, assisting in the care of the wounded during one of the country’s most tragic events. This moment exemplified her lifelong calling to help others in times of need.

A talented seamstress, Rosalba lovingly made clothing for her loved ones, always paying close attention to detail. She also found joy in gardening, adored her large family’s many pets, and treasured time spent making empanadas and tortas to delight her grandchildren, god-children, and great-grandchildren. She was thrilled to experience the privilege of making pandebonos with her great-great granddaughter! Her love for cooking, for animals, for gardening and for socializing was passed on to many of her descendants. A daughter inherited her green thumb, and a granddaughter became a professional caterer. 

With her sass and sense of humor, Rosalba turned simple moments into cherished memories. She loved to banter with her daughter-in-law who nicknamed her “Petro” and to laugh and dance with her grandson’s wife. A social butterfly, she charmed neighbors and friends, as well as her Bayada home healthcare workers, who in turn helped her with her activities of daily living as if she was a member of their own families. 

Rosalba was a devout Catholic who prayed the rosary daily, grounding her life in faith and devotion.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marco Tulio Ruiz Giraldo, and thirteen of her siblings.

Rosalba is survived by her loving children Rodrigo “Ricky” Ruiz, Ruben Ruiz, Noralba Ruiz, and Norihelly Ruiz; ten siblings; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and dear friends who will forever cherish her resilience, laughter, and love.

Rosalba is remembered as a woman of deep faith, fearless compassion, joyful spirit, and boundless love for her family and community.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial for Rosalba, which will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at St. Margaret Roman Catholic Church, 6 Sussex Avenue, Morristown.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in Rosalba’s memory to the Wind of the Spirit Immigrant Resource Center, 2 Green Village Road, Madison.

Rosalba Vergara de Ruiz, conocida cariñosamente como “Abuelita”, falleció en paz en su hogar en Dover el lunes 26 de enero de 2026. Rosalba vivió rodeada de amor en Cali, Colombia, y en Dover, Nueva Jersey, hasta los 92 años de edad.

Rosalba nació el 8 de marzo de 1933 en Aguadas, Caldas, Colombia. Fue una de veinticuatro hermanos en una familia extendida, rica en música y con un profundo espíritu de servicio público. Sus hermanos eran músicos, y Rosalba también amaba cantar y tocar la guitarra junto a ellos. Uno de sus nietos heredó el don de tocar la guitarra, lo cual llenó de alegría a Rosalba. Le encantaba cantar y bailar con músicos locales y familiares.

La familia, el servicio público y una sólida ética de trabajo fueron profundamente significativos para Rosalba. Heredó sus valores de su padre, a quien admiraba por su servicio en las fuerzas armadas de Colombia y como alcalde de su pueblo natal. Se llenaba de orgullo al hablar del servicio público de sus nietos: uno se convirtió en oficial de policía, otro en miembro de la junta escolar y del concejo municipal de Dover, y otro en veterano del Ejército de los Estados Unidos. Amó a su familia de manera incondicional y ayudó a criar a varios de sus nietos tanto en Colombia como en los Estados Unidos. Le encantaba contar historias sobre lo mucho que sus hijos, nietos y bisnietos trabajaron para alcanzar sus metas.

A pesar de no haber tenido una educación formal, Rosalba ejerció como partera y enfermera en Colombia, cuidando a otros con compasión y habilidad. El 7 de agosto de 1956, respondió con valentía a una devastadora explosión de dinamita, ayudando a atender a los heridos durante uno de los eventos más trágicos del país. Este momento ejemplificó su vocación de toda la vida de ayudar a los demás en momentos de necesidad.

Costurera talentosa, Rosalba confeccionaba con amor la ropa para sus seres queridos, siempre prestando gran atención a los detalles. También encontraba alegría en la jardinería, adoraba a las numerosas mascotas de su gran familia y atesoraba el tiempo dedicado a preparar empanadas y tortas para deleitar a sus nietos, ahijados y bisnietos. Se sintió profundamente emocionada al tener el privilegio de preparar pandebonos junto a su tataranieta. Su amor por la cocina, los animales, la jardinería y la vida social fue transmitido a muchos de sus descendientes. Una hija heredó su buena mano para las plantas, y una nieta se convirtió en chef profesional y encargada de catering.

Con su picardía y sentido del humor, Rosalba transformaba los momentos sencillos en recuerdos entrañables. Le encantaba bromear con su nuera, quien la apodó “Petro”, y reír y bailar con la esposa de su nieto. Era una persona muy sociable que conquistaba a vecinos y amigos, así como a sus cuidadores de Bayada Home Health Care, quienes la ayudaban con sus actividades diarias como si fuera parte de sus propias familias.

Rosalba fue una católica devota que rezaba el rosario diariamente, fundamentando su vida en la fe y la devoción.

Le precedieron en la muerte su amado esposo, Marco Tulio Ruiz Giraldo, y trece de sus hermanos.

Rosalba deja en vida a sus queridos hijos Rodrigo “Ricky” Ruiz, Rubén Ruiz, Noralba Ruiz y Norihelly Ruiz; diez hermanos; catorce nietos; doce bisnietos; una tataranieta; y muchos sobrinos, sobrinas, ahijados y queridos amigos que siempre atesorarán su resiliencia, su risa y su amor.

Rosalba es recordada como una mujer de profunda fe, compasión valiente, espíritu alegre y un amor infinito por su familia y su comunidad.

Familiares y amigos están cordialmente invitados a asistir a la Misa de Exequias Cristianas por Rosalba, que se celebrará a las 12:00 p.m. el sábado 31 de enero de 2026, en la Iglesia Católica de Santa Margarita, ubicada en el 6 de Sussex Avenue, Morristown.
