Oh Carmel, I’m so sorry to hear this! You and your whole family were blessed with this lovely, funny, quick-witted gentleman for so long — I can’t imagine the hole that is left behind. I was so glad to know him and relished the days we got a minute to gab as he picked you up from work for lunch. He always had something good to say, a joke to tell, or news to share. My prayers go to you all as you grieve this huge loss. Judy Stivala

Uncle Terry was a big part of my life, despite living so far away. His sense of humour and sharp wit are legendary in our family. He always warned any potential long term partners that they had a challenge ahead if taking on an O’Donohoe woman! He obviously managed fine as shown by his long and happy marriage to Carmel!
One memory Martin and I often recall is when Terry was visiting us in Skerries and himself and Martin played golf. It was a beautiful day and many people were enjoying refreshments at the 19th hole balcony which looked out on the 18th green. Terry sunk a putt that was about 10 metres (30 feet) long. Everyone cheered and Terry bowed to the audience and relished in the applause. Subsequent to that moment, as Terry retold the story at various times, the putt distance grew and grew until it was almost 25 metres (75 feet) or more!
Rest easy Uncle Terry. We’re so glad that we got to see you in August.
Carmel, Fiona, Moira and Tom, mind each other and remember that we are supporting you from afar.

Terry and my dad Tom Drumgoole had a legendary friendship. Their bond was so special and unique. There was almost a romantic quality to it, notwithstanding their heterosexuality needless to say.
In our family Terry has always held a special place in our hearts, because of that mythical relationship he shared with Tom. When Tom died, in 1978, Terry wrote a letter to my mother which we treasure. It still brings me to tears. I feel like Terry is a celebrity in our family and meeting him with Carmel 2 years ago in Dublin reinforced that role.
Terry rest in peace. You brought my dad great joy and we thank you for that. Truly this is the end of an era.

It is hard to believe that someone who was always so full of life is no longer with us.
Terry and Carmel were great friends of my late father, Fergus, and my mother, Martha. Dad was always proud of the fact that he had introduced Terry to Carmel through the Glasnevin tennis club. They shared so many laughs and lively discussions over the years, as well as holidays, concerts, many meals, and the odd Guinness together.
Over time, Terry became my friend too. He had a real gift for friendship, and for staying in touch. It was always a pleasure to read his emails - tempered only by the knowledge that a properly literate reply would be expected; an emoji would never do.
A long and successful life, truly well lived. We are so saddened by Terry’s passing and will remember him with great affection and many smiles.

I met Mr. Flanagan as I was taking a walk at Lopatcong Park in Phillipsburg. I was there from Arkansas for my dad’s funeral. He was making his way down the path by the gazebo and I was headed up.
We stopped to exchange pleasantries and I heard his accent and asked where he was from. He told me Dublin. I told him why I was there and got pretty emotional. He patiently waited while I gathered myself.
He told me his name was Terry and his wife was Carmel. He told me I had a very pleasant face. He was walking with a cane (which I was so impressed that he would take a walk around those rolling soccer fields). He told me about an accident he had as a younger man where he was badly burned and had to spend several months in the hospital. He said it was why his hand was covered in the flesh-colored glove.
Terry was a Godsend for me that day in my grief. His gentleness and kindness have not been forgotten since August of 2024.
I am so terribly sorry for the loss of your husband and father and will pray for you as you now walk through grief and loss. I pray God will send you someone like Terry that will be a balm to your soul.
Sincerely,
Sharon Faulk

The last time I saw my Grandad was just a few months ago; back in October. I was visiting him while he was in the hospital and I was lucky enough to bring him a little bit of joy and laughter as he has done for me for so many years.
Everyone who has ever met Terry Flanagan knows right away he’s the funniest person in the room. While we were there, even through the pain he felt and the desperation to go home, he was making all of his nurses and doctors laugh.
One nurse came in to give him a bladder scan and while she was rubbing jelly on his stomach in preparation for the ultrasound he just looked at her and said “you’re fantastic. I’d like to give you a lollipop.”
Everyone cracked up at both the hilarity and sincerity with which he said it.
I will love you forever, Grandad, and I will carry the torch along with your other kin in making people laugh and smile.

Terry has been my close friend and mentor, both professionally and in life, for more than 60 years. Kind, witty, brilliant, he brought warmth, laughter, and joy into the lives of those lucky enough to know him. He was unique, irreplaceable. He was a giant, but a humble giant: he seemed to think himself inferior to those whose lives he elevated. All my love to his wonderful family.

I had the pleasure of getting to meet and spend (not enough) time with Terry and Carmel, through one of his oldest friends, Dick Lynch. Terry and Dick were golfing buddies. It was a rainy night that I recall meeting Terry as he and Carmel dropped Dick off after having dinner out. His brogue and quick wit had me immediately smitten. I wanted to just sit and listen to him tell me about the old days and learn all I could from the apple of his eye, Sweet Carmel.
When I finally realized that this adorable Irish couple were the parents of Moira ( the gorgeous girl, my high school boyfriend, Sid Miller was smitten over- who could blame him!!! ) and Fiona the Phillipsburg girl turned rocker, I was tickled pink! Such a small world!
I will treasure the few times I was able to get together with Terry and Carmel because of Dick making sure that I met them. Life brings people into your world for a reason and for that I will always be grateful.
My thoughts and prayers are with you Carmel and family,
All My Love,
Caroline

Granddad and I had a long standing bit that he knew “all of the beauty secrets from A-Z” which he would only share with me so I could continue to pass down his beauty… that is of course until I became a “toothless cackling old hag”. His words of course. Granddad brought so much laughter and joy to my life, and to everyone’s lives. I absolutely loved his dry (and dark!) humor and the plethora of knowledge he shared. Recounting details from his childhood in such detail, meanwhile I couldn’t remember what I ate for breakfast that morning. He was one of kind, a true gentleman, and I’ll love him forever!
