Obituary of Susan Starley
Susan Starley (née Marcus), of East Hanover, NJ left this earth on December 3, 2025 after a long bout with COPD. She was 86.
She is survived by her daughter, Wendy Lanski; son-in-law, Jerry Lanski; siblings, Judy Shivers, Ken Marcus and Steven Marcus; sister-in-laws, Andee Marcus and Joanne Marcus. She was also an aunt, great aunt and friend, and in her last years, a cherished resident at Livia Health. Her care team at Livia treated her with love and compassion.
Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Rick Starley; former husband and Wendy’s father, Peter Brush; her siblings, Carl Marcus and Bernice Marcus; brother-in-law, Richard Shivers; niece, Lorraine Marcus; and close friends, Calvin Johnson and Miriam Meth.
Susan was born and raised in New York, growing up in the Bronx, Far Rockaway and ultimately settling in Long Island. She was born on May 8, 1939 to the late Samuel and Melitta Marcus. She moved to Medford, NY in 1971 where she lived for over 50 years.
Susan always had an affinity for the health care industry and was an LPN and dedicated charge nurse for many years at the Brookhaven Health Care Facility in East Patchogue, NY. She had many wonderful years there and made meaningful connections, including close friendships with Vince Liaguno, Vinny Pers and Teri Adler. She enjoyed all things “show business” with a particular love for glitz and glamour! She was an avid reader, especially of traditional Jewish cookbooks and biographies, and loved watching the news, old movies, comedy and reality TV shows. She enjoyed current events, cooking, Broadway music and her all-time favorite hobby was giving advice, as she was a self- proclaimed expert of all things. She spoke her mind until her last days!
Susan was a proud, dynamic and one of a kind NY Jewish woman with a sense of humor until the end. Her memory will live on eternally.
In respect of Susan’s wishes, there will be no funeral services or shiva, and a private cremation.
