Obituary of Aldona J. Skrypa

Aldona Skrypa, a beloved resident of Florham Park, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at the age of 91. Her remarkable journey through life, marked by resilience, intellect, and compassion, leaves an indelible legacy that will be cherished by all who knew her.

Aldona is survived by her two sons, John Skrypa (Renee Frankel) and Ed Skrypa (Nancy Neri); one daughter, Cathy Vogen (Michael Vogen); two grandsons, Douglas Skrypa and Alexander Vogen; and one brother-in-law, Algis Ratkelis.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Michael J. Skrypa in 2004; and her sister, Danguolė Ratkelis.

Born in Lithuania during the tumultuous years of World War II, Aldona's early life was shaped by the challenges of her environment. Alongside her sister Danguolė, she navigated the complexities of war, demonstrating an extraordinary intellect from a young age. Aldona's brilliance was evident as she translated medical journals from German to Lithuanian for her father, showcasing her linguistic talents that would later flourish.

After the war, Aldona's life took a transformative turn when she was sponsored by a penpal in Worcester, Massachusetts, to travel to the United States. She earned her undergraduate degree from Clarke University at age 18. Although she was accepted into the Duke University School of Medicine, she ultimately chose to change career direction to focus on love and family. She subsequently earned a Master's Degree in Education from Syracuse University. Fluent in five languages, Aldona's passion for learning and teaching was a defining aspect of her life.

It was during her time at Clark University that she met her future husband, the late Dr. Michael J. Skrypa, a young WWII veteran from Rhode Island. Their love story blossomed, leading to a marriage that would span decades and a family that they cherished deeply. After starting their family in Syracuse, New York, they settled in Florham Park in 1967, where they created a warm and loving home.

Aldona dedicated her life to education, serving as a teacher in Madison, where she inspired generations of students with her passion and dedication. Her influence extended to Chatham and Florham Park, where she was known not only for her teaching prowess but also for her kindness and approachability. Aldona's students often spoke of her with affection, a testament to the profound impact she had on their lives. One notable achievement was that she was honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching by President George H. W. Bush, for her science teaching accomplishments. Many of her former students lovingly sent her cards in her advanced age, which she cherished.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Aldona was a devoted mother, wife and friend. She embraced life with enthusiasm, traveling the world and forming lasting connections with those around her. Her love for collecting amber was a reflection of her appreciation for beauty and history, and her social spirit brought joy to many gatherings.

Aldona will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was a tapestry woven with love, intellect, and a commitment to education that will continue to inspire future generations. As we remember Aldona, we celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy that will endure in the hearts of those she touched.
