ANDRÉS LOPEZ DEL RIO!!! That’s how Rohan Jr. said your name when he told me you and he had to work on a project for a class at MJS. I should have known how amazing you were with a name like that. And then I met you. You were one of the kindest and respectful boys I had ever met. You and Jr. grew apart, but you, being a clarinetist, allowed me to see you grow because you played alongside Ella. This allowed me to see your parents often at every band concert. How could ANDRÉS LOPEZ DEL RIO not be so amazing with parents like that? They, too, were among the kindest people I have ever met. I saw that you were the perfect combination of both of them. Sometime along the way, I met your brother, Mariano; likely because of track. How could ANDRÉS LOPEZ DEL RIO not be amazing with a brother like that?
ANDRÉS LOPEZ DEL RIO. My heart is shattered knowing that you are no longer here. I will miss your doe eyes; they were so full of light. I will miss your rosy cheeks that appeared when you laughed at my silly mom jokes. I will miss your woolly, dark, curly hair.
I will be forever grateful for you and Mariano willfully giving up your Saturday morning to help this mom of 5, who took the winding road to earn her undergrad degree. You and your brother took time from your Saturday to sit and talk with me at the Madison Public Library to inform my final thesis.
It is a privilege to have known you, ANDRÉS LOPEZ DEL RIO. What a name… I will never forget.

From the moment I first met Andrés when I was a sophomore and he was a freshman, he had always been super kind and friendly to me. Someone who would always say hi or talk. He was also super musically gifted and I was amazed at how well he could play in jazz band and wind ensemble quickly surpassing me. Whenever I’d go into the band room he would always be practicing. He pushed me to be a better person and musician, with his optimism and dedication inspiring me to become the best version of myself .
Prayers to the Lopez family and Andrés

Andrés, I am beyond grateful for the time we had together. Thank whoever scheduled our classes, because I am so lucky I got to see you in stat, precalc, and macro. I will always remember sitting together in stat, and how you were so appreciative after I helped you on the final project that you found someone else to text me thank you because you didn’t have my number (it wasn’t even necessary, I didn’t do that much). I’ll also remember you as one of the kindest people I ever knew, especially in how you always waved hi to me no matter where in the world I saw you (even in the Madison Walgreens parking lot). You truly did make everyone’s day a better one, and I am eternally grateful for that. Rest easy and shine bright, my friend.

Andres was one of the kindest, most genuine people I’ve ever known. He never judged anyone no matter what, and always made people feel safe, seen, and loved. He had this smile that could light up every room and a way of making everyone around him laugh and feel welcome. In marching band, he was a friend to everyone, someone you could talk to about anything.I’ll miss seeing him every day — his joy, his jokes, his warmth. It still doesn’t feel real that he’s gone. But I know his spirit will always be with us, especially every time we step onto the field. Andres, you made such a difference in so many lives. We’ll keep playing and spinning for you, smiling for you, and carrying your kindness with us always.❤️

There’s not enough words in any language to describe how much Andrés meant to the community, or to describe how much his passing hurts. Andrés was so so passionate, kind, funny, and caring, he inspired everyone around him to do better and to be better. I first met Andrés in our eighth grade algebra I class, and that might have been one of the best things to happen to me. I’ll never be able to forget how Andrés lifted everyone’s spirits, and I hope I can emulate even a quarter of his enthusiasm and kindness. Rest in peace to one of the most amazing people I’ll ever meet. We love you.

Dear Andrés,
I hope you are doing well in heaven alongside Jesus.
Although I stopped taking French, I will never forget the 3 years we spent together in French class. We were both little freshmen in a class of sophomores, and we stuck together ever since. We did every exercise and every project together. We would always second guess ourselves in our accents if there was a difficult word. I won't ever forget your boba keychain and that twirling thing you do with your pencils.
We took biology together as well. I had a lot of fun laughing with you, and if we had a lab involving food we would always share.
I regret that I never had the honor of hearing you play, but I bet you are a great musician. Hopefully, you are able to play in Jesus's band.
Rest easy bro.

Andres,
We are all deeply heartbroken over your loss. You were such a good friend to Eric, giving him someone he could share his passion for music with. Beyond that, your kindness and maturity touched him and made him a better person.
Watching you and your friends play soccer in my backyard made me appreciate all the many dimensions of the friendships that you all shared. But for me, my forever memory will be last Sunday at our house, when you came inside from all the outdoor fun and played with Eric's younger brother. It was so touching to see you take a moment out for someone else, and to Ethan, it was the whole world to have some time
With his older brother's closest friend.
There are no words to describe this loss. We wish you and your family peace and love.

It is extremely difficult to put into words the feeling that have been brought on by your passing, Andrés. It’s even more difficult to think about your incredible life and your impact on mine. Every note played, every song sung, every single thing that is done, a tiny part of it will be done for you. You will live on. You are alive in so many ways and you will live on. The thing that I remember most about you is all the times you played music with me; that was the majority of our interactions. A favorite memory of mine is when we were playing the Christmas stuff for that Christmas thing and I wrote the parts, and for your part I would write intricate, difficult stuff because I knew you could do it. I got so excited every time you nailed something I wrote. But not because I doubted you could do it, because it was always nice to hear great music. And there will be so much more great music, and it can all be for you. You are loved, Andrés, and you always will be. Rest easy.

Dear Andres,
I remember walking into the gymnasium for my first marching band practice, and seeing you there with your clarinet. You were wearing your purple flannel, and I remember wanting to learn how to play clarinet as well as you did.
You taught me how to play my clarinet after four years of not playing, and you also taught me how to partly learn the alto saxophone. You made me find passion in playing the clarinet, and you helped me a lot with my marching.
You were the best section leader any person could ask for (when you played clarinet in the marching band, that is), and you were the sweetest and nicest person I had the opportunity of meeting. No question was a stupid question when I was with you, and I don’t think I would be where I am if it wasn’t for you.
Thank you Andres, we all love and miss you.

I first met Andrés the start of our sixth grade year. I had just moved to Madison that summer and did not really know anyone at school. We were both in the band at that time and played clarinet. It was there where he introduced himself to me. I can remember being quite nervous that day but that conversation with Andrés made me feel better and left me knowing I would have a great school year. From there on we shared experiences in various science classes and music lessons, where his passion for music sparked. I can remember our virtual clarinet lessons during the covid years and later when we went back to school and had to play outside in the parking lot because we weren’t allowed to have our masks off inside. Moving into high school we started having out french classes together. We would always second guess ourselves during the speaking activities if there was ever a difficult word that came up. Although I decided to not continue band in high school I had still had the honor of playing with Andrés in the jazz band and the jazz cabaret. He was an incredibly talented and gifted musician who had a passion for the art like no one else I have ever seen. Rest easy Andrés.

The passion Andrés had for life is indescribable. There was not a single moment he took for granted. If he wasn’t working to make himself better, he was helping someone else to improve themselves. I have marched with Andrés for the past 4 years, starting from both our rookie years. I watched him grow from a freshman who couldn’t keep his feet in time to the young adult who everyone knew they could count on to fill in the solo for the Hey Song. Andrés and I started at the same place in marching band and at the same time, but he rose above any and all expectations people had for him and became the mentor that everyone needs in life. He not only flew above us all with his talents, but he brought us with him. Not a day went by where he didn’t inspire someone and that will never change. I love you.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Andrés’s passing. While I didn’t know him personally very well, I did have a class with him last year. I also had the pleasure of seeing him play music in a variety of settings, and it was clear how much talent, joy, and heart he brought to what he did. His love for music and kindness towards everyone was evident.
My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, teachers, and everyone who knew and cherished him. May his memory bring some peace to those whose lives he touched.

Andres was such an amazing person. We were never super close but he was so kind to everyone he knew, regardless of how well he knew you. He was one of the most gifted musicians I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and he was so committed to his craft, you could see the passion for music in his eyes. I am honored to have known someone as compassionate, as kind, and as humble as he was. I never have and probably never will know someone as wonderful as Andres. I will forever try to be more like the person he inspired me to be.

It was so fun being in band with him for 3 years and getting to know him along the way. I will miss the times we had together. Rest in peace Andres

I had the privilege of working with Andres on a song for a cabaret. In the few rehearsals we had, I learned what an honor it was to know someone as talented, dedicated, and genuine as Andres. The fact that he showed up to our first rehearsal with the music 100% down, no wrong notes, not a beat skipped, reflects how much work and passion he put into the things he loved. Every interaction I shared with him was filled with kindness and laughter. His legacy will live on in the MHS music program forever. Rest in peace Andres.

A gifted clarinetist, Andrés brought music to life with every note, most memorably for us in a rousing performance of Did I Remember, which he shared with our daughter—she sang, and he played with quiet brilliance. Band is more than music; it is family. As parents, we came to know and cherish his own family—always present, always kind, and a constant source of encouragement and joy for all the kids. Andrés is gone far too soon, and his absence is a tremendous loss to all who knew him. His spirit will echo in every song, every halftime show, and every memory he helped create.
Our condolences and deepest sympathy ...

I’ve never met anyone more full of life and music. He truly seemed to emanate music constantly. If he was sitting down, he was tapping out rhythms with his feet. If he had an instrument in his hand, he was noodling. And when he played, the vibrance of his song just seemed to fill up the room. He had a true gift. I consider myself lucky to have gotten to play with him. He’s jamming at the great gig in the sky now, and his music stays forever in my heart.

Andres was so kind and genuine and he never judged anyone. He would smile and wave at me every time we made eye contact, and it made me feel like I could always talk to him, even if we weren’t super close. It isn’t common for a person to be so friendly to people that they don’t know, and Andres always saw the best in people. I only ever heard Andres speak positively about anyone and anything.

Last year, in marching band Andres was behind me in our basics block. Each time in the machine when we had to march backwards, I would always turn around with my trombone and almost hit him in the head. Every day we would try not to laugh, and I definitely hit him at least once. He never held it against me, and his positive energy was infectious. Rest in peace Andres, the whole band misses you so much ❤️

Andres was one of my first friends when I moved here. We went through Boy Scouts together and experienced so many wonderful things. We played with legos and played Plants vs Zombies together all the time. He was a god at motis in Brawl Stars. He was the kindest person I ever knew and a genuine ray of sunshine. He even gave me relationship advice. Rest in Peace bro. I miss you ❤️

Andres was always a friendly face to me. I could be walking down the hallway and stop to talk to him. We could crack jokes, talk about life, or just enjoy each other's presence. Marching band was so much fun with him. He was genuinely the best type of person. He would always try to cheer people up even when the situation was down. He would frequently put others before himself. I am extraordinarily lucky to have had him as a friend. He was also one of the most dedicated musicians I knew. Nobody was more committed the clarinet than Andres was. He was such a talented player, effortlessly shredding every solo he performed. He was an outstanding musician and I hope other music students at MHS will feel inspired by him. Rest in peace, friend.

This is honestly one of the saddest things I have experienced. Even though I couldn’t see Andres everyday, every time I saw him he was always so positive, so helping, and so supportive. The last time me and him talked we were talking about funny moments in marching band that we saw over the years. Andres I wish you were still here and I will play every musical performance for you. Rest in peace. Love you man.

Marching band simply won’t be the same without Andres. I remember marching in my rookie year last year and talking with him a lot. He helped teach me how to march, and we would always joke with each other during resets. Rest in peace Andres, thank you for being an amazing friend and musician, and I hope you’re in a better place now.

The first time I ever spoke to Andres was in 5th grade when I called my friend and he picked up. Since that day Andres became such an important part of my life. He was a familiar face when I joined marching band and without him I genuinely would have quit. I’ll forever miss our conversations, you always made me laugh and always laughed at my jokes when no one else would. You were so kind and I will miss seeing next to me at marching band. Your little waves always kept me going. I miss you so much.

This doesnt seem real. I still remember when the two of us watched movies together in his basement, we never got to finish Pinocchio.
When someone so young passes away it is like they are robbed of a chance to be anything, you aren't given enough time to find yourself or achieve greatness, but still regardless, Andres found a way. He was easily one of, if not the single most talented musicians I have ever had the chance of meeting in my entire life. His devotion to music was genuinely so inspiring, I remember when he told me about how much he practiced and I was genuinely in shock, and after that day I’d practiced more than I had ever before.
I think back to when we dressed up as each other for halloween and the times we would walk home from school together and I can not physically comprehend how that person is gone. Still now it almost feels like I’m writing about what it would be like if he’d passed. Andres was someone who deserved such a greater chance but still prevailed to greatness without it.
Rest well, friend.

I had the pleasure of teaching Andres two years ago at the winter percussion program. It was clear to me that he saw music as a language rather than a skill--an incredibly rare mindset to find in students his age. Music to Andres was an extension of himself and a vehicle to express himself in ways that words cannot.
To the family of Andres, thank you for bringing Andres into this world. His strong moral character is a testament to how well he was raised. The memory of Andres will live on in the lives he has touched.

One of the nicest kids I’ve ever met and always smiling and optimistic. I remember playing in jazz band with Andres, and although he was in the grade below me, his talent level was much higher than mine. I admired his amazing solos on the tenor, and his overall style. What a great kid who has left us too soon. Prayers for the Lopez family and for Andres.

In fourth grade, Andres went up to me and asked “do you know who I am?” This was a random question to me, but I just said “of course, you’re Andres”. Little did I know, I’d never really get to know who he was until later. Andres was my rock and I was his. He was such a committed individual, whether it was music, friendship, or school, Andres always excelled, and when he didn’t excel, he did his best to get better. We always confided in each other, and our lives were open books to one another. I never have and probably never will know somebody who matches my psyche more than him. Now that he’s gone, it’s my responsibility to carry him with me everywhere I go. I know he’d be extraordinarily angry if I let myself fall into a permanent funk because of him. Andres was and always will be my very best friend. I’m gonna miss you man. A lot.

One of the qualities I will always remember about Andres was his deep dedication and passion for music. Knowing that he practiced every single day made me truly admire his discipline and commitment.
I will never forget the kindness in his eyes behind his glasses and the calm presence he brought into the short conversations we had.
He touched the lives of those around him in a special way, and I feel blessed to have known him.
May his soul rest in a better place, while also living on in the hearts and minds of all of us who carry his memory with gratitude and love.

The first time I saw him, I was struck by his beautiful eyes, filled with kindness and tenderness. He carried the soul of someone far older, one who seemed to understand this world in a different way. I often felt he was quietly observing the adult world around him, while he himself embodied the calm maturity of an old soul.
He was a child who radiated serenity, a sensitive and creative spirit. His time on this earth was far too short, yet long enough to leave an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know and love him.
In my mind, I will always hold his smiling face, his eyes that seemed to hold the wisdom of many lifetimes. My deepest wish is that those who loved him may find comfort in the memories of his music, his laughter, his unique way of seeing the world, and all the incredible moments shared with him.
Transcend, Andrés, may your vital energy reach the place you were seeking.

Andres was an amazing human being and will be sorely missed. He was a quiet light to all around him, a great friend and example to others, and one of those students that exemplified the Marching Dodgers. As a staff, we knew we could always rely on Andres to go above and beyond and do whatever was needed, both on and off the field. Sending love to all that were lucky enough to know Andres as we process this loss.

Andres and I went to the same elementary school, and we both played the clarinet. He was always so talented, and I remember how good he sounded even when we were just starting out. In middle school we were stand partners, and we would always get yelled at by Mr. Rossi for laughing too much. Those memories will always make me smile, and I’ll never forget the joy he brought.

In my freshman year in high school, we were in the same geometry class, and this year, we were in the same calc class in the same room, which I thought was fitting. There is gonna be an empty seat now. In marching band, he was a constant force. Everyone knew that he was a talented player and marcher, who would always help people with any questions if you asked. Dear Andres, you basically taught me how to play the clarinet last year, and when I was a rookie, I couldn’t tell my lefts from rights, so I would march incorrectly. you would remind me every time “Left, left left” and we would laugh about it after. Andres was a very talented musician who played both clarinet and tenor saxophone. He was also my friend and someone I looked up to and wanted to emulate as a musician. During school, we would always nod to each other in the hall when we passed, and eat lunch in the band room together. Andres contributed greatly to the marching band and wind ensemble, and his dedication will make a lasting mark on the program. I send my prayers and condolences to Andres' family and everyone else that loved him - may his memory live forever in your hearts. Andres was an excellent clarinetist, a great first chair player, an outstanding marcher, and probably more importantly of all, the best friend that everyone asks for. I (on the left) was one of his good friends, and he was one of the most optimistic and kindest people I’ve ever met. We would always wave to the other sections in wind ensemble while playing and he added so much to the band program at Madison. When I couldn’t take the field lining cart to practice, he would come early just to take it for me. We would always say “let’s go Andres” or “let's go Nathan” to eachother every day. He inspired me and so many others to be kind, to seek improvement everywhere, and to practice everyday. Andres was the role model we all needed and I can’t say that enough. To the family: god bless you all and I pray for you with an open heart. This is devastating. To Andres: You were the best role model, friend, and human being I could’ve asked for in my life and god bless you my friend. - Nathan Beland

I didn't know Andres until this year, when I joined the marching dodgers as a rookie. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first. I didn’t know how deeply I’d connect with others, the sense of companionship I’d come to feel, or just how much I would learn through the activity. From the very beginning, Andres stood out to me as a role model. He was someone you could always count on, not just for his skill and dedication to band, but for the way he carried himself with such kindness and humility. He was someone I sincerely looked up to, learned from, and admired deeply.
I’m utterly heartbroken that he’s gone. But I’m grateful for the time I got to spend with him, no matter how short it was. Andres left a mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, and I’ll carry his spirit with me in every step I take, on and off the field.
Rest in peace, Andres. Thank you for everything.
