Obituary of Susan H. Mahler

Susan H. Mahler, beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on September 14, 2025, at the age of 80.

Born on October 27, 1944, in East Orange to the late Ellsworth P. Hyde and Marion Nimmo Hyde, Susan grew up in Bloomfield before the family moved to Short Hills. She later settled in Madison, where she built a life defined by curiosity, kindness, and devotion to her family.

For many years, Susan worked as a secretary in the guidance department at Summit High School, a role she treasured. Known for her impeccable organization, keen book recommendations, and compassionate support, she took great pride in helping students navigate their journeys, especially through the college application process. Susan kept in touch with many of her coworkers after retiring, including through participation in various sports pools, with which she had both a great deal of fun, and a great deal of luck.

A lover of learning in all its forms, Susan delighted in reading anything and everything, challenging herself with board games and jigsaw puzzles, and was a particularly skilled bridge player. She found peace in the simple joy of birdwatching through her kitchen window, often marveling at the visitors to her birdfeeder. Her boundless curiosity and enthusiasm for knowledge were traits she lovingly passed on to her children.

Susan was a sunny optimist with a determined spirit, balancing sensitivity with strength. Above all, she adored her children and considered them her best friends, cherishing every moment spent with them.

She is survived by her son, Ronald E. Mahler, and his wife, Viosa; her daughter, Christine Mahler; her sister, Joan Valkys; her nephews, Michael and Eric Valkys and their partners Lisa and Lynne, and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Ellsworth and Marion.

Lovingly nicknamed “Sweet Sue,” Susan will be remembered as a bright, caring, and steadfast soul who touched the lives of many with her warmth and wisdom. Her legacy of love, resilience, and curiosity will continue to inspire those who knew her.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the visitation for Susan on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a funeral service celebrated at 6:00 p.m. at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison.

Interment will be held privately for Susan’s family.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in Susan’s memory to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Madison Public Library, 39 Keep Street, Madison, NJ 07940.
