Obituary of William A. Borie
William A. “Buzzy” Borie, of Madison, formerly of Summit and Convent Station, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. He was 97.
He leaves behind his devoted daughters, Donna Hastings and her husband, Peter, and Shelly Borie Barton and her husband, Mike; six cherished grandchildren, Ryan and his wife, Anastasia, Kyle and his wife, Kym, Tyler and his wife, Da, Kelly and her husband, George, Lucy, and Chloe; nine treasured great-grandchildren, Ava, Logan, Brady, Blair, Cole, Nathan, Marley, Hana, and Luna; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Buzzy was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Lucy Borie (née LoSapio) and his two brothers and four sisters.
Born and raised in Summit, Buzzy was a people person to his core. He owned and operated Borie’s Luncheonette and Deli on Morris Avenue in Summit and later opened Buzzy’s Place, which he ran with his wife, Lucy. Buzzy and Lucy were introduced by a mutual friend, marrying on May 18, 1951. They made a perfect team and worked together 7 days a week. Buzzy was the heart and soul of the deli. He knew every customer who came through the doors and had nicknames for them all. He made the best Taylor Ham, egg, and cheese in the county along with his 99 cent cheeseburgers and Lucy’s famous meat salads.
Buzzy was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Braeburn Country Club in Florham Park and was Club Champion at Basking Ridge Country Club. Buzzy could putt lights out, a passion that he passed down to his granddaughters Lucy and Chloe. The proud “Poppy” loved watching them play tournament golf through his 80’s and 90’s. Buzzy also enjoyed shooting craps as well as watching and betting on the horse races. He went to his favorite racetrack in Saratoga for decades and loved his $2 bets; he never boxed them. He also loved spending summer days at the Monmouth Racetrack with his family. Buzzy was a big fan of the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Stealers, and Seton Hall college basketball. He liked to Jitterbug with his wife, Lucy, in his youth, had a big sweet tooth for candy and ice cream, enjoyed Raymond’s Jersey tomatoes and sweet Jersey corn, and read the New York Post every day. Buzzy adored all his friends at Chateau Thierry and their bingo nights. It was the highlight of his week.
Buzzy will be forever missed by his family and friends, but they take comfort in knowing that he is at peace and reunited with his beloved Lucy.
Services for Buzzy are being held privately for his family.
