Dr. Quinlan was without a doubt a great human being, mentor, educator, and clinician. I was one of the many medical residents that was lucky enough to have had an opportunity to be taught by him. The world of medical education needs more educators like him. I just heard of his passing today from another physician that graduated with me from UMDNJ/Rutgers and I am very saddened by such. Dr Dennis Quinlan was without question, the most gifted Professor and Mentor of physicians in training . He had the unique ability to transform medical students to become the best physicians possible. He was a strong champion of diversity, equality and inclusion and he worked diligently to ensure the highest quality of care for all patients.. He instilled those same values in all of his Medical Students and Residents. Imagine the millions of patients lives he saved through the rigorous training of all of his students! He was my best Clinical mentor. and I also admired his devotion to his family and community. His valuable contributions to our medical school were innumerable. He will never be replaced. We will miss him very much and I thank him. I send my sincere condolences and prayers for health and peace to his wife and children.

Dr.Quinlan was a strong leader and a caring and compassionate boss. I had the honor of working under him for 12 years as a PA in the Dept of Medicine at the VA. My favorite memory of him is when he would catch me in the hall or at the copy machine after he had sent everyone home during a blizzard. He'd say,"what are you still doing here?" I'd say ,"catching up on some work while it's quiet." As he said,"ok" and started walking down the hall,he turned and said, "come in a few hours late tomorrow, of course, if you don't have patients"

I suppose there can be no more compelling evidence of Dr. Quinlan’s immense influence and impact than the fact that now, forty years after my graduation from NJMS, I remember hm so clearly. I know that many in my class saw him as a role model, as both a clinician and a teacher. He was demanding of his students, but in that way he helped us become better. It is not so much that we were scared of him (though I think we were, at least a little) but that we craved his approval and wanted him to think that we were capable of living up to his very high standards. Thank you Dr Quinlan for sharing your knowledge of medicine with me when I was a student and intern. You showed me to pay attention to detail as they mattered. You were lovingly tough and while scared at times of what you’d say or think I appreciated your honesty and wisdom. You were patient with this insecure young doctor and you taught me to have faith in myself. You gave me that strength and confidence by simply saying “ you know this, it’s there reach for it. I have faith in you”. I was so honored to have given you our classes Golden Apple award. One of many you received through the years. You were the doctor I always strived to be. I met Dr Quinlan when he joined NJMS faculty in 1974. It was the old Martland Hospital and we attended class in Quonset huts. He was a commanding presence: kind yet fierce, gentle yet demanding. As a third year student in 1978, Dr Quinlan was the first Internal Medicine Mentor I encountered. He met with us regularly and I can truly say he is the main reason I became an Internist. An endless list of memories, from different stages of life. The teacher : The fishbowl (IYKYK) : come past 8:00 am and you stay outside. The teaching: “ when do you become a doctor? What do you mean you were off??” Quoting the NEJM from years before by volume and page. The colleague: always with advise, supporting every decision, and telling you what sometimes we don’t want to hear. The friend: that person that is happy to see you even if you only see each other once or twice a year. He was the lost knowledgeable professor I had, the ultimate internal medicine role model, a man who taught you how to be a doctor but also Show you how to be the best doctor. A colleague, a neighbor. One of the people at UMDNJ i respected. We both came home one day and saw a biker on the ground and an ambulance arriving. Both of isvtan to the scene, worried it could be one of our kids. The victim was unconscious and the two older physicians told the EMTs to give D50. The victim began moving around. We congratulated ourselves. Later we found that the victim had a massive CVA. Our therapy didn't really do anything.
