Obituary of Frank Hartwell

Frank S. Hartwell, a longtime Florham Park resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Morristown Medical Center. He was 93 years old.

Frank was predeceased by his loving wife of 70 years, Mildred Hartwell, only 5 months ago, his father Albert S. Hartwell, his mother Gabrielle Hartwell (nee Martelin), and his sister Pearl Ridgeway. He is survived by one son, Phillip Hartwell and his wife Annie of Florham Park; one daughter Louise Bennett of Florham Park; 5 grandchildren, Matthew Bennett, Gregory Bennett, Jillian Mangiafridda, Graham Hartwell, and Alexander Hartwell; 5 cherished great-grandchildren, Matthew, Lindsey, Gavin, Greyson, and Frank; and 2 nieces, Vicky Caskey and Vilma Daly.

Frank was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY before moving to East Orange, then to Florham Park in 1956. Frank had many great accomplishments throughout his life. He and his late wife Mildred were charter members of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Florham Park. He was elected as Florham Park Councilman, appointed as Police and Fire Commissioner from 1964-1967, a Special Detective with the Florham Park Police Department, a member of the Florham Park American Legion for over 70 years, a 32nd Degree Mason at the Madison Lodge #93, and a member of the West End Garden Club. Frank was very proud of his service in the US Navy during World War II.

Earlier in life, Frank loved boating at the New Jersey shore every weekend. His motor yachts were very special to him. Before retiring several years ago, he was self-employed, owning several businesses such as Brown Conditioning Company, Hartwell Associates, and Clifton-Paterson Hardware.

Relatives and friends may gather at 9AM on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison followed by a 10AM funeral service at the funeral home. Cremation will be held privately at the family’s request. A visitation will be held from 4-8PM on Friday at the funeral home.
